The long awaited Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill has been published today. So much of interest to cover in here, - eg on academies, new schools, new provisions about accommodation for children with complex needs and authorising use of accommodation for depriving children of liberty, an end to the duty to convert failing maintained schools to academies. All of which I promise to discuss after Christmas. But for today, when the heartbreaking suffering of Sara Sharif was laid bare in Cavanagh J’s sentencing remarks, perhaps the most important part of this Bill is the chapter that deals with home education. It contains restrictions on parents’ ability to remove certain children from school, and a duty on local authorities to maintain registers of children not attending school. These provisions may be controversial in some quarters, but surely, we have to do something to try and prevent another tragedy like this one.

If you're wondering what PINS is, here you go... 👉 Partnerships for Inclusion of Neurodiversity in Schools (PINS) Meeting the needs of children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) in mainstream schools is essential to improving outcomes (across attainment, attendance and wellbeing), parental confidence and delivering the financially sustainable SEND system, as envisaged in the SEND and Alternative Provision (AP) Improvement Plan. Partnerships for Inclusion of Neurodiversity in Schools (PINS) will bring health and education specialists and expert parent carers into mainstream primary settings to: 👉Help shape whole school SEND provision. 👉Provide early interventions at a whole school level. 👉Upskill school staff. 👉Support strengthening of partnerships between schools and parent carers.

What does it take to truly put stakeholders in the driver's seat of a planning process? 1. Co-creation from the beginning to the end -- stakeholders don't just share insights or review a draft, they are partners in the process from the very first meeting. 2. Extensive, equity-based community engagement -- community members can engage in different ways, virtually or in person, in their preferred language, and are compensated for their time and expertise. 3. Responsiveness in the process -- project leads are willing to change the process based on what is learned along the way, inviting new voices in or creating additional opportunities for dialogue, to make sure the plan will truly address the insights that were shared. We were proud to facilitate a process that did all of the above and more in Marin County, to develop their early learning roadmap -- a proactive strategic approach that will strengthen the county's entire early learning system. The government’s new guidance, Keeping Children Safe: Helping Families Thrive, introduces a clear focus on the needs of children, emphasising early intervention, strong relationships, and collaboration across families, schools, and social care. The guidance highlights the importance of creating safe and stable environments, stating: “A child’s safety and well-being depend on the people and structures around them working together.” Education plays a key role in identifying need and providing consistent support, making schools a central part of this joined-up approach.
