Does department-store advertising need to feature the store itself? ↴ John Lewis & Partners have just dropped their long-awaited Christmas ad, which many now regard as the start of the Christmas season. 🎄 But this year, they have done it differently. In the ad, Saatchi & Saatchi UK take us down memory lane by exploring the connection and relationship of two sisters, one of which is desperately trying to find the other a present. 🎁 Exploring connection through emotional storytelling is John Lewis' usual style, but this year they do one thing completely different. They feature their actual store. 🛍 This is a complete change from their usual tactic of subtly throwing a logo or JL shopping bag into the mix and it will be interesting to see what the results of the more blatant approach is. Is it better to be subtle or in-your-face with the brand making the ad? 🤔 The campaign has triggered largely mixed reactions, but in the end the data will show whether the change makes a significant impact on their usual Christmas footfall. Over the past 15 years, I’ve had the privilege of working on hundreds of films for all types of brands. One of the most frequent questions I get is: What’s the ideal length for a brand film? My answer has ALWAYS been the same: A film should be as long as it needs to be to share the story in a way that engages the audience, and makes a meaningful connection. Volvo powerfully proved this theory in a beautiful way with their recent 3-minute and 46-second Instagram ad. The film was shot by Hoyte Van Hoytema—the genius cinematographer behind Oppenheimer and Interstellar — and the ad captured audiences effortlessly. Its success is proof that when you pair a compelling story with masterful execution, time becomes irrelevant. The undeniable connection it created speaks volumes about the power of thoughtful storytelling. She also said, "please can we buy Dove soap because of what they stand for." Importance of brand marketing! Get ready to watch the ad that will change the world…the one that should make everyone rethink their marketing strategies! Flipping the script on gender stereotypes, making women across the world gasp at the moment he “hands over then handles” the dishes, and the fact that this is a SHOE ad and it can evoke this much attention, emotion, and command such a presence is beyond impressive. Bravo to all parties involved. Best lesson I’ve learned in marketing to date from one commercial: do the unexpected in the most opportunistic timing.

Award-winning director Nina Gantz delves into the stories behind her standout work for brands such as Loewe. Gantz has had a fascinating life and career so far. She grew up in a theater family in the Netherlands, with her actress mother and technician father, before studying at the National Film and Television School in England. Her graduate film ‘Edmond’, a stop-motion puppet film, won Best Short Animation at the Sundance Film Festival and a BAFTA Award. But it was her collaboration with Loewe that caught my attention, especially the Christmas film inspired by arts and crafts pioneer William De Morgan, and a celebration of China’s Qixi Festival, drawing inspiration from children's TV and playful cut-out animations.
