First Time Going to Summer Camp: Homesickness and How to Support Your Child As we enter the summer camp season, it’s a time filled with excitement, adventure, and new experiences for both kids and parents. The first time going to summer camp is a significant milestone, but it can also bring about feelings of homesickness. Here’s how you can support your child before they head off to camp, helping them transition smoothly and make the most of their camp experience. Preparing for Camp Start by talking to your child about what to expect at camp. Discuss the fun activities, new friends, and exciting adventures awaiting them. Help them imagine getting on the bus, giving you a big hug, and feeling proud as they embark on this new journey. The more they know about what to expect, the less anxious they will feel. Addressing Homesickness Homesickness is a normal part of the camp experience, especially for first-timers. Reassure your child that it’s okay to miss home and that many campers feel the same way. Encourage them to talk to their counselors if they feel upset. Counselors are trained to help kids cope with homesickness and can provide comfort and support. Communication Tips for Parents When writing letters or emails to your child at camp, focus on the positive aspects of their experience. Avoid phrases like “We miss you so much” or “The house feels empty without you,” as these can make your child feel more homesick. Instead, share stories about fun things happening at home and ask about the activities they’re enjoying at camp. Long-term Benefits Experiencing homesickness and overcoming it can build resilience and independence in children. It teaches them how to cope with being away from home, which is a valuable life skill. Kids who go to camp often come back with greater self-confidence, new friendships, and a sense of accomplishment. Remember, a little homesickness is normal and part of growing up. With the right support and encouragement, your child can have a wonderful and enriching camp experience. How do you help children prepare for separation, like the first day of school, and how can these strategies shed light on preparing for summer camp? Share your insights in the comments! #SummerCamp #Homesickness #FirstTimeCampers #ParentingTips #GrowingUp #ResilientKids #CampMemories #SupportiveParents #HappyCampers #HappyCamperLive

In a sea of camping options, I'm constantly asked by parents 'What makes Camp Moraine different?' And I always tell them the same two things: 1. Our programming is purposeful: We build programs around 3 pillars in order to achieve 3 goals. Nature, Art and movement based programs to create opportunities for our campers to explore who they are, connect with others and learn what it means to belong in a community. 2. Diversity and Inclusion: We believe camping should be for everyone, not just those with the means to pay. Therefore, we made the bold decision to charge a slightly higher rate in order to help more families join at reduced costs and bring the camping experience to more children. If your still looking for new and engaging summer opportunities for you child, check out our recent blog post on how Camp Moraine is standing out from the crowd: https://lnkd.in/gxBfaD_g #summercamp #daycamp #BeverlyMA #Nothshore
