Should the Arts Sector be a delivery agent for the new government's 5 Missions (see below)? That appears to be what Arts Council England is positioning the sector as. I believe such a strategy involves big risks: An "Instrumentalist" approach (where art only exists to serve a (political) purpose) risks replacing the principle of arms-length funding with vassal funding. Were that to happen, artists become delivery agents of the state, and audiences become whomsoever the government wants them to be. At this transformative moment in UK history, doesn't the sector more than ever need strong voices advocating for artistic freedom, and for excellence being the driver of new audiences? * The 5 missions are: Kickstart economic growth, Make Britain a clean energy superpower, Reduce violent crime, Reform childcare & education, and Fix the NHS.

Is Public Funding For The Arts Worth The Hassle? One can carp about the sad history of direct public arts funding in the United States and many do. But one might also argue that there were consequences far more dire for champions of the idea of government dollars for the arts. https://lnkd.in/gpB2Pg9g

The UK’s visual arts sector calls for sustained support from the government to maintain its contribution to the UK's creative economy. 📢 We've joined more than 4,000 arts professionals and artists in signing an open letter to Lisa Nandy MP, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. The letter urges the government to take steps in supporting the visual arts sector, as per the recommendations of the Visual Arts Manifesto proposed by Art Fund and 23 other arts organisations earlier this year. The letter puts forward three of our key policy asks: • To ensure every school child visits a cultural organisation every year • To protect free entry to museums and galleries • To expand the Museum and Gallery Exhibition Tax Relief The letter and manifesto were highlighted by The Guardian this weekend: https://bit.ly/4gbEio9 📝 Read the letter: https://bit.ly/3ZbLavE

**NEW REPORT** The National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NASAA) serves on the Grantmakers in the Arts board and is introducing this report that is the culmination of more than 18 months of dialogue with Indigenous artists, elders, culture bearers, tribal liaisons, leaders of Native organizations, and individuals working inside the tribal relations offices of U.S. state and federal government agencies. All artists face challenges, but Indigenous artists face extra hurdles from the effects of fraud and cultural appropriation. Support to Native organizations and artists represents only about 0.4% of state arts agency grant funding, and many tribes are not aware that state arts agencies even exist. It's a critical time for our sector to really lean into what we are and what our value proposition is to arts and culture. So grateful to have research to dig into to help us through this time of reflection and reframing... Go ADC Consulting !!
**NEW REPORT** Arts service organizations (ASOs) play a critical role in nourishing the United States arts ecosystem and have been doing so for generations. Led by cultural strategist Alejandra Duque Cifuentes and Senior Research and Planning Consultant, Carrie Blake of ADC Consulting LLC, in collaboration with an Advisory Cohort of arts workers, this multi-phase research project began in May 2023 with background research to understand what is already known about arts service organizations (ASOs) and ground the process in the experiences and perspectives of ASOs, their workers, partners, funders, and beneficiaries. Input wanted: Research into arts residencies in Scotland Dr Anna McLauchlan is currently researching arts residencies in Scotland for a Scottish Society for Art History (SSAH) journal article. She is looking for edits and additions to this google doc, containing organisations and sites in Scotland that routinely host residencies (or did host them in the past): https://lnkd.in/ed3n3KfR She is interested in the breadth of organisations that routinely host residencies (or did so in the past). Categorisation can be tricky, so details about all residency initiative are welcomed. Your input will be acknowledged in any published work – you can add your contact details to the spreadsheet in the ‘source (your name)’ and ‘source contact’ columns OR email anna.mclauchlan@strath.ac.uk with your details. The outcomes of this broader research can be requested by emailing anna.mclauchlan@strath.ac.uk.

"It is more important than ever for public officials and funders to understand the immense social and economic value of the arts and culture – not as embellishments but necessities." Read about how we (that means *you*, too!) clawed back $1 million for 11 restored positions at the city level and $17.5 million at the state level. Details on that and more in Ricky Abilez, MPA's latest blog below.
I wrote a blog in June about the pattern and paradox of divesting from the arts. https://lnkd.in/gtpJD-Db
