The #GreatLakes are essential to the health and well-being of millions of Canadians, natural ecosystems and the economy. Protecting them is critical and that is why we are leading a Freshwater Action Plan! One great example to spotlight is the work being done in #ThunderBay to enhance riparian and coastal habitats. Here, we are adding stormwater filtration features to protect #LakeSuperior and implementing a wildlife habitat strategy for this Area of Concern. 🐟🌩️ Learn more about this project and more: https://ow.ly/Wxt850U2zPr Lakehead University

Addressing the Human-Elephant Conflict in Sri Lanka: A Path Toward Coexistence The human-elephant conflict (HEC) in Sri Lanka has emerged as a significant challenge, with elephants causing damage to crops, property, and even posing a threat to human lives. Simultaneously, this conflict jeopardizes the survival of Sri Lanka's elephant population. Addressing this issue requires a multifaceted approach that not only resolves immediate concerns but also tackles long-term challenges. This approach must carefully balance the needs of local communities and the conservation of elephants. One key element in mitigating this conflict is the restoration of wildlife corridors. By establishing safe, well-managed corridors, elephants can move between fragmented habitats without encroaching upon human settlements. These corridors should be strategically placed to link vital forest reserves, reducing the need for elephants to enter agricultural areas. Moreover, forest restoration is crucial to revitalizing degraded elephant habitats. Reforestation efforts provide not only food and shelter for elephants but also help restore ecological balance, ultimately reducing the pressure on surrounding farmlands. Through these initiatives, we can promote peaceful coexistence, safeguarding both human communities and the elephant population. #HumanElephantConflict #ElephantConservation #SriLanka #WildlifeProtection

Today, 5th June marks another #WorldEnvironmentDay. 🍃 🌍 The theme this year: Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience. #MillenniumForest is a great example of #landrestoration, from a barren eroded wasteland to a thriving forest. The aim is to restore the once ‘Great Wood’- a forest of endemic gumwoods (Commidendrum robustum). 💮🌳 Restoration work first started in the 1980s and the official launch was in 2000. Many funded projects and staff have contributed to the forests advance. Today the forest covers over 25 hectares, provides habitat for other endemic species (Wirebird, gumwood leafhopper and Loveridge’s hoverfly) as well as creating a community space. 🍀🍃🌳 Support the Millennium Forest! #sthelenaisland #conservation #communityforest

Even as the challenge of rehabilitating the landslide-affected looms large, the disaster raises other issues. Once a dense forest, Wayanad now has tea and coffee plantations, tourist resorts, road projects through the mountain ranges, and mono-culture crops like rubber whose roots do not hold water. Over 40 percent of Wayanad is vulnerable to landslides and floods – 17 of 25 gram panchayats and two of three municipalities are environmentally fragile. As climate change exacerbates rainfall, clear land use policies and construction norms are needed. Yet, government plans for the Rs 858-crore road that will drill into the mountains, which held the landslide-struck Chooralmala-Mundakkai villages, are on. Have heard about the Majestic Lilac-Breasted Roller? Get ready to learn! Today’s Spotlight is on the Majestic Lilac-Breasted Roller. This stunning bird species is found in sub-Saharan Africa. Generally like others birds species, this bird help to maintain the balance in our ecosystem through pollination, seed dispersals and pest control. The beauty it adds to the environment is pure pleasure with their melodious sounds. This beautiful birds is facing numerous threats due to anthropogenic activities. Those clearing of land activities for urbanisation, industrialisation, infrastructure and agricultural purpose has led to the destruction of their natural habitat. We must take action to do things sustainably in order to protect the Lilac-Breasted Roller and other African bird species! Start by sharing this post to educate others to also take responsibility. Tiger conservation in Nepal is both a significant achievement and a continuing challenge. Nepal is home to the Bengal tiger, a keystone species critical to maintaining ecosystem balance. Despite progress in conservation, challenges persist due to factors such as habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and poaching. #BigCats #Tiger #Nepal #Conservation #Challenges #HWC #Poaching #IWT

Did you know there's a place left on earth that's still pretty much untouched by deforestation? 😯 With more than 95% of its forests intact, the Central Cardamom Mountains Landscape is one of Cambodia’s least deforested areas, and one of Southeast Asia’s largest remaining areas of wilderness. Due to their isolation, the natural resources of the Cardamom Mountains — estimated to be worth well over US$ 1 billion — have been untapped by outsiders for centuries. It supports nearly 4,000 members of the Chourng and Por Indigenous communities, and provides habitats for more than 500 species, including over 50 threatened wildlife on the IUCN Red List. But as Cambodia has developed, this region is increasingly vulnerable to illegal logging, hunting, forest clearing and land encroachment. 🌊 Ocean Stories🌊 🐟💧Reviving the European Eel The European eel (Anguilla anguilla) has faced dramatic declines, but there’s hope on the horizon! Once critically endangered, this amazing species is seeing signs of recovery thanks to dedicated conservation efforts across Europe. What’s Being Done: 💙Elver Restocking: Juvenile eels are being released into European rivers and lakes to boost local populations. 🌱 💙Habitat Restoration: Efforts include restoring riverbanks, wetlands, and removing barriers like dams to support eel migration. 🛠️ 💙Innovative Solutions: Eel-friendly passages help them bypass obstacles during their migrations. 🚧 These combined efforts are making a real difference, with increased eel numbers in certain areas. Let’s celebrate this success and continue supporting conservation actions that protect our incredible wildlife! 🌍💙 📷 Unplash #EuropeanEel #EelConservation #OceanRecovery #WildlifeProtection #FreshwaterRestoration #ConservationSuccess #TogetherForNature

Attika region, 35 km outside Athens looses its forests (…) The climate change hits hardly Greece and it’s a major wake up call! Greece has the funding to deal with that huge financial cost ( 2 billion Euro?) but the challenges are big! The cost of rebuilding a burned forest can vary widely depending on several factors, including the size of the affected area, the type of vegetation, local environmental conditions, and the methods used for reforestation. On average, reforesting a hectare (about 2.47 acres) can range from $2,000 to $10,000 or more. This includes costs for site preparation, seedlings, planting, and ongoing maintenance. In some cases, additional expenses might be incurred for erosion control, wildlife habitat restoration, and monitoring. #Greece #neadimokratia #syriza #pasok
