Did you know that Canada ranks 13th in the world for deceased donor rates and 11th for living donor rates? Canada’s continued investment in donation activities such as mandatory referrals and donation physicians has improved donation rates to meet national and local system needs, but we must continue these efforts to become a world leader in this important field. UPDATE I want to thank all who have helped spread the work or even tested as a possible kidney match for my loved one. Unfortunately, we do not have any successful matches, and time is of the essence. Stony Brook University Hospital's Transplant Department participates in the Kidney Paired Donation (KPD) Pilot Project, which is part of the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN). KPD, also known as kidney exchange, is a program that allows transplant candidates to receive a kidney from a living donor who is compatible with them, even if they are not compatible with their original intended recipient. The database is used to match a kidney from a donor who is incompatible with their intended recipient to a recipient who also has an incompatible donor, a swap! Simply put, you do not need to be a direct match for your intended recipient to indirectly help them in receiving a living donation. I urge anyone that would like to learn more to call me at 631-255-2667 or the Stony Brook Transplant Team at 631-444-2209 and ask for Ashley Cirrone for further details. Sincerely, Mark Gatien

Every year, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day on June 14. This year marks the 2️⃣0️⃣th edition of the event Donating blood is one of the simplest, yet most important ways to help others. Did you know that one donation can save up to three lives? Blood is essential for surgeries, cancer treatment, organ transplants and emergencies 🚑 Thanks to regular blood donors, hospitals and medical centers can provide essential treatment to all those in need. In most Polish cities, we are facing shortages of many blood groups in blood banks. Only in the case of the most specific blood groups (AB Rh+, AB Rh-) are stocks optimal. 🔴 The most common blood types in Poland are A Rh+ (32%) and 0 Rh+ (31%). 🔴 In Poland blood or blood components can be donated by people between the ages of 18 and 65 who weigh at least 50 kilograms. 🔴 Donations from universal donors (0 Rh-) are especially needed, as they can be used for transfusions in all patients.

The other day, I was donating blood at a Hema Quebec blood clinic, and I thought to myself: why don’t more people donate blood? Perhaps there’s a lack of encouragement and information about blood donations. While half of Canadians will need blood or know someone that will need blood at some point in their lives, only 4% of Canadians donate! This is a horrible statistic! Facts to consider: · The average, full grown human body has about 4.5 – 5.7 L of blood · A blood donation only takes 450 mL of blood · One donation can save up to three lives · Blood transfusions are needed to treat patients with serious injuries, surgeries, cancer treatments, and disorders such as sickle cell anemia and hemophilia · Donating blood doesn’t hurt · The entire process of donating blood (including screening) takes an hour out of your day · The actual blood donation takes about 5-10 mins · You have to be 17 years old to donate in Canada (except Quebec where you have to be 18 years old) · There is no maximum age for donating blood · Giving blood reduces your risk of a heart attack (especially in men who tend to have higher iron levels) · Giving blood reduces stress · Giving blood screens you for multiple medical conditions · Giving blood is free Wherever you live, please check out the below websites to find a blood donor clinic near you: www.blood.ca/en https://lnkd.in/ehz__WGZ www.redcross.ca/ #héma-quebec #canadianbloodservices #redcross

World Organ Donation Day is celebrated annually on August 13 to raise awareness about organ donation and to thank donors. Its objectives in 2024 are to celebrate organ transplantation's achievements, increase the number of people who register as organ donors, and increase public awareness of the urgent need for organ donors. It's time to inform people about the value of organ donation and how it can prevent fatalities. This year, let's raise awareness, assist neighborhood donation drives, or register as organ donors ourselves. PLEDGE I promise to: On this World Organ Donation Day 1. To assist in spreading knowledge and understanding, tell family, friends, and coworkers about the significance of organ donation. 2. Agree to register as an organ donor in order to make sure that my desires are recognized and honored in the future. 3. Promote and back groups and projects aimed at enhancing the processes of organ donation and transplantation. 4. Assist and motivate people to discover more about organ donation and their capacity to effect change. 5. Give thanks and recognition to people who have given their organs and to those whose transplants have saved their lives. By taking this pledge, I contribute to a cause that can save lives and bring hope to many. #OrganDonation #GiftOfLife

Earlier this year, you may have seen that we sponsored and attended the British Transplant Games, where over 1,000 transplant recipients competed in over 25 sporting events. We were lucky enough to be a big part of the Archery event, where we were able to not only raise awareness of the importance of organ donation, but also highlight some of the lesser-known impacts people can experience post-transplant. We are committed to working with the community to improve outcomes for all transplant recipients. One such impact is Graft-versus-host-disease, a life-changing condition which affects many people following stem cell transplant. In a recent survey, we found that 85% of people experiencing GVHD said it impacted their everyday mobility and physical activity, highlighting why events such as these are so important!
