We are thrilled to share the Meridian Urban Regional and Town Planning Scholarship for Indigenous students at #UQ. Valued at $10,000 per year for 4 years, this scholarship is the first of its kind for UQ School of Architecture, Design and Planning and is open to both current and future Indigenous students pursuing a Planning degree. This scholarship was created by Stephen Dredge and Heidi Dredge of Meridian Urban to foster diversity in urban planning and amplify Indigenous voices in the profession. “We need diversity to build sustainable, prosperous communities. This scholarship is about empowering Indigenous students to drive positive change,” Stephen said. "I think the key piece is alignment, so finding the spots where the university's academic mission and the government's priorities are aligned and without that alignment, it doesn't matter if you're in desperate need of a new building if the government doesn't care, they're not going to fund it." "That alignment must be discovered through a whole lot of relationship building. So, the government relations team is critical in this, and their ability to read the room at the political level is vital. You need that to get something." The University of Waterloo and Ontario land development and homebuilding company Caivan Group launched the Future Cities Institute (FCI), thanks to a $10-million commitment from Caivan. FCI is an interdisciplinary hub housed within UWaterloo’s Faculty of Environment. FCI’s founding director is Leia Minaker, an associate professor in UWaterloo’s School of Planning who studies links between health and city design. Drawing on expertise from across faculties and leveraging partnerships with industry and government, FCI will take on big issues like the modernization of city planning and the optimization of infrastructure to prioritize not only how cities will be laid out, but also, how they will be sustainable. Deep examinations of the root causes of pressing issues, like housing and urban transportation, will lead to the development of data-supported toolkits and practical guides that industry and governments can apply to urban policy and building to drive prosperity for all, UWaterloo said. FCI will create a global network of academia, government, industry, and grassroots organizations to mobilize a large body of quantitative research and train a new generation of leaders. Its focus will be on four key areas of research: housing, modelling, mobility, and sustainable infrastructure – and how they intersect with sustainability, economics, society, health and technology. Caivan CEOs and co-founders Frank Cairo and Troy van Haastrecht, both alumni of UWaterloo, have supported the university’s Future Cities Initiative since 2020, donating an initial $1 million to seed the initiative. C'est avec grand enthousiasme que je partage ma récente nomination en tant que Président du Conseil de l'École Doctorale (CED) en Architecture et Urbanisme de la Conférence Régionale Centre, ainsi que ma désignation en tant que Responsable du Comité de Formation Doctorale (CFD) à l'Ecole Polytechnique d'Architecture et d'Urbanisme EPAU (EPAU) pour la spécialité : "Architecture durable et projet urbain". Ces nouvelles responsabilités représentent un défi stimulant, en raison de l'enjeu de promouvoir l'excellence académique et d'encadrer la formation des prochaines générations de chercheurs dans les domaines complexes de de la ville.
