Canadian Physiotherapy Association’s Post

In early 2024, the CPA’s Federal Pre-Budget Submission to the Department of Finance reinforced the position that physiotherapy remains an underutilized resource. It encouraged taking direct action that would enable physiotherapy professionals to order diagnostic imaging and laboratory tests in all jurisdictions and highlighted the potential for physiotherapy to reduce the economic burden of illness in Canada by $144 million per year. The Ontario Physiotherapy Association successfully advocated for the provincial government to expand the scope of practice of physiotherapists in Ontario 15 years ago through Bill 179, but Ontario is still waiting on regulation changes needed for implementation. By acting on these changes, physiotherapy professionals will be better equipped to provide the critical care that so many Ontarians need.  The CPA is committed to working in partnership with our colleagues and members in Ontario to resolve the challenges that Canadians face today in a burdened healthcare system. https://lnkd.in/gnK2_Ujc For more information on Scope of Practice and to learn more about how you can support this work -- https://lnkd.in/gh9Qav8i For Ontario-specific details to share with your provincial MPP -- https://lnkd.in/gkAaCD5B To read the full Federal Pre-Budget submission -- https://lnkd.in/gMmD7h6x

Thank you Canadian Physiotherapy Association for continuing to advocate and raise awareness with Ontario Physiotherapy Association of the importance of physiotherapists practising at their full scope. This 100% supports physios important role in advancing interprofessional care while working towards increasing roles and funded positions in team-based care in all domains of care (primarycare, hospitals, home & community). #fullscope #WearePT - a critical contributor to comprehensive care for Ontario patients. Physiotherapists continue to play a key role - Good for patients, their outcomes and recovery and for our health system.

Honestly I’m not sure if it’s even worth the fight for you with our current system. I just ordered a simple AP and Lat X-ray of a knee. The patient just sent me a text saying the imaging facility “didn’t know how to do this.” I don’t know what to say.

Oh for crying out loud, folks. NO WE DON'T!!!! WE ALREADY HAVE IT! We want to be able to USE it as it currently IS within our scope and is legislated for us to do. But other acts that are decades old need to be changed. I repeat, we ALREADY have the scope within the Physiotherapy act...for the last 15 years!
