New online-first in the journal Canadian Psychology: 'Becoming a culturally responsive and socially just clinical supervisor' - Spowart, J. K. P., & Robertson, S. E. "Clinical supervisors are responsible for attending to and addressing issues of culture, diversity and advocacy so that they may better prepare new mental health practitioners to support populations from diverse backgrounds. Little is known about the training experiences and needs of clinical supervisors as they learn to carry out this important work. The present study addresses this gap in the literature by highlighting the experiences of supervisors-in-training and provides tangible education and training recommendations to help ensure more culturally responsive and socially just clinical supervision practices." https://lnkd.in/e3ZxRpX7

I attended the Division of Health Psychology Annual Conference last week in Stirling and had the opportunity to present my poster about patient safety incident investigations. The conference was filled with innovative research and insightful discussions. I attended talks about alcohol intake, caregiving, social aspects of health, young people, and wellbeing. During these sessions, I learnt new ways to analyse and compare language used in policies compared to lay documents, the long-term effects of Covid-19 on children’s school attendance, and novel ways of including young people in research. #DHP2024 #ResearchPresentation #Psychology

Last month, I had an enjoyable sharing at the The Hong Kong Psychological Society about the topic of Making an Impact Beyond the Therapy Room with Dr Edwin Chin. Here is a summary of the sharing. This sharing helps me to reflect on my journey as a clinical psychologist to an administrator. 𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 Clinical psychologists can significantly broaden their influence by stepping into roles that go beyond direct therapy. Engage in project leadership, team management, and the preparation of funding proposals to support innovative mental health programs. This enables psychologists to contribute to mental health at a systemic level. 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 Partnerships are instrumental in extending the reach and enhancing the effectiveness of mental health initiatives. Collaborating with educational institutions, healthcare, and community organizations can create a bigger network that amplifies your work. 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Psychologists have the expertise to advocate for beneficial mental health policies and practices. By writing op-eds, joining professional societies, and participating in policy-making processes, you can shape mental health strategies that affect thousands. This kind of engagement not only positions psychologists as thought leaders in the field but also ensures that mental health considerations are integrated into public policy effectively. As we expand our roles, we not only enhance our professional growth but also forge paths that lead to significant societal benefits. #ClinicalPsychology #HealthcareLeadership #PublicMentalHealth #CommunityImpact

"Turn back to the most subjective part of yourself, to the source of your being, to that point where you are making world history without being aware of it…" C.G. Jung, 1933 The on-going mental health crisis cannot be viewed independent of a world that is more fragmented and polarized than ever. In the clinical psychology program at Pacifica Graduate Institute, we recognize the interwoven and dynamic nature of psyche and culture; the ways in which the inner world and outer world constantly influence and shape each other. This reality mandates the need to evolve the healing values of psychotherapy with the justice values that concern every community. In the Clinical Psychology graduate program, this means the research and work we engage with is focused not only on the inner work of addressing depression, anxiety or worse, but also on the ways that psychotherapeutic values can be responsive to the contemporary challenges of our communities. Pacifica Extension and International Studies invites you to join us for this complimentary series of on-line monthly “Lighthouse Conversations” convened by core, adjunct faculty, and students in the clinical program. This series is designed to offer you an opportunity to connect with the scholars and practitioners who are shaping the future of depth clinical practice at Pacifica Graduate Institute and to explore imaginative, new initiatives all aimed toward responding to our current human condition. Learn more about our vision of clinical psychology, our curriculum, the opportunities to become clinical psychologists, and the rewarding work each student engages in to realize that dream. Introducing Dr. Montgomery-Graham: a clinical psychologist whose approach is informed by a distinctive background in both law and psychology. After several years of practicing law on Bay Street as well as representing Indigenous Canadians in the Residential Schools class action, Dr. Montgomery-Graham completed a Master of Science and PhD in Clinical Science and Psychopathology. Her experience in law and mental health allows her to approach complex clinical issues with a unique perspective, combining rigorous assessment with an open-minded, non-judgmental approach. #ClinicalPsychology #EvidenceBased

The new RCI guidelines on BSc Clinical Psychology have left me feeling confused, disappointed, and concerned I shudder at the thought of my 19-year-old self being placed in a therapy room with clients who are already vulnerable due to past adversity, childhood trauma, and current struggles with life transitions, grief, or mental illness Reflecting on the American Psychological Association's code of ethics, particularly the principle of beneficence and nonmaleficence, I worry whether these guidelines truly uphold the commitment to do no harm if we cannot help I sincerely hope the RCI reconsiders these guidelines to prevent placing such young and inexperienced individuals in potentially harmful situations and takes corrective action for the betterment of our profession and the well-being of our clients #MentalHealth #ClinicalPsychology #RCIGuidelines #TherapyEthics #PsychologyStudents #APAethics #DoNoHarm #Beneficence #Nonmaleficence #MentalHealthProfessionals #TherapyRoom #ClientSafety #ProfessionalStandards #YoungPsychologists #PsychologyEducation #EthicalPractice #ProtectVulnerableClients #RCIreform #PsychologyConcerns #MentalHealthAdvocacy
