Perth's Riverfront Master Plan, which spans over 2km along the banks of the Derbal Yerrigan / Swan River in Western Australia, will transform the city's waterfront into a dynamic, interconnected, biodiverse urban landscape. Enhancing the appeal of the capital, the design will create an exciting and vibrant destination for residents and visitors. The City of Perth Council recently gave the green light for the master plan to move to public consultation. "We are thrilled to be engaged by the City to develop this Riverfront Master Plan which marks the beginning of a major transformational, city-shaping project, providing a framework for re-connecting people and the city with the river," says Hassell Principal Anthony Brookfield. "There is a clear opportunity to develop a substantial shift in how this important city space works within its environment, benefiting the local community, visitors and native wildlife." A highlight of the master plan is the river walk, a 1.7 km water's edge journey showcasing Whadjuk Noongar culture and stories through public art, interpretive design, and a 330-metre-long arbour. The master plan includes bio-engineered features such as rock headlands, stone terracing, boardwalks, and beaches to enhance the river's edge, and extensive sedge (grass-like) planting. Two significant wetlands will improve water quality and biodiversity, and over 500,000 native plants and 3,000 trees are proposed alongside these wetlands to boost river health and support local ecosystems. 🔗 Explore more of our award-winning nature positive design: https://lnkd.in/gWCq-pHs 🖼 Image by WAX Architectural Visualization #UrbanDesign #PublicRealm #PlacesPeopleLove #PerthRiverFront #CityofPerth #BioDiversity #Regenerative

Visualization of the Design Plan for River Border Areas with Minimal Land The design plan must apply a sustainable concept that can solve problems and emphasize the activity program that will be held on the site. The URBAN AGROCOMMUNITY concept creates a space that can be used to accommodate the activities of the surrounding community. There are 3 focuses of the development plan, namely ecological, socio-cultural and increasing economic value. It is hoped that visitors will not only come from the surrounding community, such as academics, special communities, and even tourists will be interested in visiting this ecotourism village area as a thematic village and model village. #riverscape #communalspace #landscapedesign #architecture #designprocess #sustainabledesign #urbandevelopment #urbanfarming

Last week on World Green Roof Day, The Architek Group of Companies hosted an event for the Green Roof Infrastructure Network (GRIN-BC) to celebrate and showcase the benefits of green roofs. It was a hot day and many people remarked how cool it was on the green roof. Plants do an incredible job of cooling the surrounding environment through evapotranspiration. Urban Heat Island effect is a serious problem in cities as unnatural surfaces like black rooftops are making temperatures in cities much higher than surrounding ecosystems. A black rooftop on a hot Summer day can measure more than 60 degrees Celsius! The ambient effect of many black rooftops, concrete, and glass amplifies temperatures in cities even more. We need abundant amounts of living architecture like green roofs to help cool cities while providing other benefits like biodiversity habitat and rainwater sequestration. #architekgroupofcompanies #grinbc #wgrd #greenroofs #livingarchitecture #northvancouver #vancouver #metrovancouver #britishcolumbia #evapotranspiration #urbanheatisland

Exploring the unique beauty and challenges of Fairbourne – a place where nature’s resilience and human ingenuity meet. 🌿 In my landscape architecture journey, I’ve had the privilege to observe how this coastal community faces rising tides, dynamic sand dunes, and the ebb and flow of its wetland ecosystems. This video captures just a glimpse of what makes Fairbourne so special – from its tranquil sunrise to the steadfast battle of its vulnerable marshes against the rising waters. In my thesis project, I faced a real-world challenge: How can a small town like Fairbourne, which is threatened by rising sea levels and climate change, be redesigned ? 🗾Through my graduate project, the Mawddach Botanical Garden, I explored sustainable design solutions to respond to these challenges. Here, the environment speaks for itself, and the lessons it offers are invaluable. 🌍My main goal was to combine landscape architecture with nature-based solutions to create a sustainable space rich in biodiversity, one that not only addresses these challenges but also offers an opportunity for nature revitalization and reconnects humans with it. 💡 The core idea: Designing a botanical garden that not only functions as a green space but also acts as an “open system” for managing surface water, protecting biodiversity, and educating the local community about the impacts of climate change. ⚡ The main challenge: Analyzing the site and understanding its ecological and human needs to create a design that is environmentally harmonious while preserving the cultural and aesthetic values of the area. Stay tuned! In upcoming posts, I will share the site analysis, design process and concepts of the project. I would love to hear your thoughts on this idea. Do you think botanical gardens can help people address climate change? #LandscapeArchitecture #ClimateChange #UrbanDesign #NatureBasedSolutions #Farinourne #SustainableDesign #UrbanGreening #EcoDesign #Biodiversity #Rewilding #ResilientDesign #EcoFriendlyDesign

Sponge city for sustainable future? Why not? 🏘️ Have you ever heard about "sponge city" concept? Made by Beijing-based architect Kongjian Yu, this idea offers a revolution to urban planning. How so? 🌱 It focuses on integrating large-scale nature-based infrastructures such as wetlands, greenways, and parks into urban landscapes. These elements act like sponges, absorbing excess rainfall and reducing the risk of floods, while enhancing urban biodiversity and resilience. By doing that, sponge cities prioritize ecological functionality and climate adaptability. And what's more important - it engages a deeper connection between humanity and nature. Have you ever heard about such concept? 💭 #ecology #city #architecture #sustainability

In various projects in the #MiddleEast Virtual Climate showed that by simply choosing the right type of vegetation (canopy trees instead of palm trees) and materials (sandstone finishes rather than concrete), the number of comfortable hours in the ‘habitable’ areas of hospitality venues could be increased by more than 1000 hours and this meant two months of additional usability and as a result, increased revenue for local businesses. #sustainability #construction #climatechange #construction Veda Baliga Ruggiero Guida https://lnkd.in/dM3srGnV
