It is that time of year again, where second year students are applying for internships, and final year students/current graduates are looking for the first step of their graduate career. This time can be daunting and and often disappointing, however there are several ways that can help you stand out in the application process🏆 🟢 First and foremost, be yourself! Employers want to get to know you for your true personality, so try not to let nerves get in the way of showing what you’re about. 🟢 Each job you apply for may have a different application process, and they can be tricky- being prepared for these and sparing time to focus on interviews and assessment centres can make it much smoother- have your points and questions ready. 🟢 Research the company you have applied for to show your genuine interest, and put across exactly why you are the best fit for their role. Make sure that your CV mirrors this, even if it means tailoring it slightly. 🟢 Show initiative! Emailing the recruitment teams and employers, or sending them a message on Linkedin could be the thing that makes you stand out above others. After making it to the next round, I recently flew to Joburg for a workshop and pitching event held by the SAB Foundation. I can only say that it was an incredible day (despite only being able to attend half of the workshop they were running). What struck me more than anything else was how many amazing people are out there, selflessly trying to make a difference, and how they've thought outside the box—all to improve other people's lives and truly make a difference. Sitting in the company of young entrepreneurs who think this way was humbling and inspiring. After hearing their inventions, I couldn't help but feel that they all deserve to win. Even more remarkable was that this sentiment was shared among all of us, immediately erasing the feeling of being among competitors. Instead, we were surrounded by people we wanted to support in achieving their goals and making their initiatives a reality. We genuinely want the best for them. The competition is split into two categories—social upliftment and innovations around disability. When you listen to these ideas, you realise just how huge this is and how these inventions could truly change lives. Being part of this group has left me feeling humbled, inspired, and honoured. The highly regarded judges have generously given their time and insights to pour their hearts into what they're doing, carefully considering each participant. This no longer feels like a competition to me but rather a platform to share what we're trying to achieve and a space to expose our ideas. We are sitting among like-minded individuals, all of whom genuinely want the best for each other. The awards will be in October, but as I mentioned, it's really not about that anymore. So all I ask is that you take the opportunity to learn about all the contestants, see their amazing ideas, and, if there are any inventions you particularly resonate with, support them!
