🌱Celebrating World Soil Day 2024 🌍 World Soil Day highlights the importance of healthy soil and advocates for the sustainable management of soil resources. This year, we embrace the crucial message: “Caring for Soils: Measure, Monitor, Manage.” At CANALLS, we’re proud to contribute to this global mission by co-creating and implementing agroecological practices to address soil degradation and biodiversity loss in the humid tropics of Central and Eastern Africa. ✅ We focus on integrated soil fertility management, building on the use of recycled nutrients from crop residues and waste products across the value chain! ✅We assess changes in soil health by measuring soil physical and chemical properties! 🤝 Let’s join forces to safeguard our soils, secure the right to food for all, and build a fairer, more sustainable future! #WorldSoilDay #SustainableAgriculture #SoilHealth #Agroecology CIRAD, International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), University of Hohenheim, NIBIO Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research, Q-PLAN INTERNATIONAL, Rikolto, Université Catholique de Bukavu, Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board, AATF, African Forum for Agricultural Advisory Services (AFAAS), PrAEctiCe, CIRAWA, NATAE, BIO4Africa, Global Landscapes Forum (GLF), Biovision Foundation, Agroecology Map

📢 Open calls for agroecology funding! The Global Collaboration for Resilient Food Systems, a program of the McKnight Foundation Foundation, just announced two thematic funding calls due May 15, 2024: 1) Agroecology as a Bold Climate Solution: “While many proposed climate solutions fail to address interconnected global crises like biodiversity loss, agroecology may be a means to equitably address multiple global crises simultaneously through various approaches that diversify production systems and strengthen regional food systems. When compared to other approaches, agroecology is a bold climate solution.” 2) Agroecology and One Health: “This thematic open call attempts to identify synergies between agroecology and One Health to address the multifaceted challenges in the Sahel within a context of climate variability and change.” 🔗 Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/enYen3w9 Photos courtesy of the McKnight Foundation. #Agroecology #AgroecologyFunding #ClimateSolution #ResilientFoodSystems #McKnightFoundation #OneHealth #Sahel #ApplyNow #FundingOpportunity

We depend on healthy soil—it provides over 95% of our food and 15 of the 18 essential nutrients by plants. Yet, unsustainable farming practices and rapid urbanization are degrading soils around the world, threatening food security, biodiversity and human health. As part of EJN's latest collaborative project, Ground Truths, we partnered with The Gecko Project, Pulitzer Center's Rainforest Investigation Network, and 11 media outlets in Asia to investigate the state of soils across the continent. On #WorldSoilDay, dig into this far-ranging special report, which explores the benefits of soil fungi in Singapore, the growing importance of soil testing facilities in Nepal and more: https://loom.ly/wkBYdUw. #GroundTruths #SoilHealth #SustainableAgriculture #CollaborativeReporting #SoilDegradation #FoodSecurity #Biodiversity #EnvironmentalJournalism #ClimateJournalism #SpecialReport #Investigation #RegenerativeAgriculture #Asia

The soil is home to over 50% of #biodiversity on Earth. And the microscopic life that thrives in soil (bacteria, fungi, yeasts, Archae, algae, slime molds, protozoa) feeds nematodes, arthropods, gastropods and earthworms, themselves feeding a universe of insects, reptiles, mammals, and birds. All this population works the soil and brings structure, fertility, and protection against erosion. Soil microbes are the foundation of the soil food web (see my digest of Teaming with Microbes in my newsletter Nina's Microbial Discoveries), the beating heart of biodiversity, the chance to reduce synthetic fertilizer use, to trap carbon into the soil and mitigate climate change. And nurturing the soil microbes is the only way we can reach food security for the next generation. That's why I joined Cybele Agrocare. To help shift perspective in #agriculture and learn to team up with soil #microbes. Happy International Biodiversity Day!

UNDERSTANDING TRIPLE "F" AGROECOLOGY MODEL Triple F Agro ecology (Food-Feed-Forest) is an ecological system manifested by togetherness and symbiosis of trees of high ecological value, with crops and livestock of good economic, health and ecological values designed to give a hilarious aesthetic and recreation appeal. This system displays a forest rich in macro and micro biodiversity fortified with diverse types of human food, livestock feed and bee forage. It is organised in a scientific and artistic design where each of the elements contributes to the sustainability and resilience of the system. This is achieved through the complementarity and interdependence of the system’s elements that create an ecological synergy good enough to enhance a household’s or communities social and economic sustainability. The Triple F Agroecology Model is being implemented in western Uganda at Triple F Agroecology Demonstration Centre where it has shown the possibility of addressing issues of climate change, Food security whilst conservation natural resources such as forests and wetland ecosystem. #naturebasedsolutions #climatechange #sdgs2030 #Biodiversity #consevation #TripleFAgroecology #Agroecology #FoodSecurity

📣 Over 120 leaders from around the world will gather in Tanzania over the next few days to scale and accelerate the transition to regenerative and agroecological food systems. An ambitious transition to agroecology and regenerative approaches can reverse biodiversity loss, tackle climate change and increase food security. We’ve coordinated the Cultivating Change Gathering in partnership with Biovision Foundation and Agroecology Coalition. Find out more about the gathering and why agroecology and regenerative approaches are critical to tackling the climate, biodiversity and health crises: https://bit.ly/3yAZvq4. #foodsystems #agroecology

It is good to know the best way to rejuvenate the landscape.

To plant or not to plant trees ... that is NOT the question! Rather how, when and where should regeneration be complemented by planting? As some people talk about the UN Biodiversity convention at COP16 Colombia scientists reckon that more than a third of tree species are now threatened with extinction - the IUCN red list is growing at an alarming rate! ... meanwhile others have gathered in #Kisumu #Kenya to look at how biodiversity can be integrated with farming at the #FRN convening on #Agroecology. Farmer managed natural regeneration #FMNR is a great way to harness tree diversity to bring both livelihood and environmental benefits. An evidence review is garnering increasing interest https://lnkd.in/dJHFv55r alongside research it recommended on when, where and how natural regeneration needs to be complemented by enrichment planting https://lnkd.in/du3B8-uB Add to the mix the need to climate proof tree planting and regeneration initiatives and there is lot to think about, but also easy-to-use tools to help you navigate https://lnkd.in/djTPgRYF Wageningen University & Research CIFOR-ICRAF McKnight Foundation FAO World Resources Institute Madelon Lohbeck Chris Reij Mieke Bourne Robert Winterbottom The World Bank Patrice Savadogo, PhD Mike McGahuey Gray Tappan Tony Rinaudo Agroecology Coalition Bangor University Ramni Jamnadass Alice Muchugi Dr Susan Chomba Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew
