RABAT, March 11 (Reuters) - The Moroccan government said on Monday it will allocate 1 million hectares to green hydrogen projects, starting with 300,000 hectares in a first phase, as part of an offer to attract investors. Green hydrogen, produced by splitting water through electrolysis using renewable energy, is expected to play a key role in decarbonising industries. The initiative would help Morocco "play a major role in the field of energy transition globally," the prime minister's office said in a statement. Morocco's offer applies to integrated projects covering electricity generation from renewable energies and electrolysis, to the conversion of green hydrogen into ammonia, methanol and synthetic fuel, it said. It also includes incentives to investors, the statement said, without offering details. The offtake would be both for export and for domestic use, it said. Some 100 investors have already expressed interest in producing green hydrogen in Morocco, which has ambitions to capitalise on abundant sun and wind to accelerate its energy transition. As the continent strives to meet its energy needs and reduce carbon emissions, green hydrogen stands to offer a transformative solution. 🌱 Green hydrogen, a versatile and emission-free fuel produced from water and clean electricity through electrolysis, offers significant potential for decarbonisation. It is a particularly exciting solution for sectors traditionally reliant on fossil fuels, including transportation, heavy industry, and long-term energy storage. 🌍 The European Investment Bank has projected that Africa could produce over 50 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2035, with production costs at €2 per kilogram — a price competitive against global oil prices of ~€90 per barrel. 🌟 Significant strides have been taken to position Africa at the heart of green hydrogen developments. In 2022, the Africa Green Hydrogen Alliance was established, involving Egypt, Kenya, Mauritania, Morocco, Namibia, and South Africa — key countries leading green hydrogen efforts on the continent. 🌞 Africa is uniquely positioned to become a major producer of green hydrogen due to its abundant solar and wind potential. The International Energy Agency estimates that Africa has 60% of the world's best solar resources, but currently accounts for only 1% of global solar generation capacity. Projects in Morocco and Namibia are leading the way, demonstrating the continent’s vast potential to harness renewable energy. But how can Africa ensure it leads this emerging market? Firstly, 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 between African nations and international players will be vital. Namibia’s $10 billion Hyphen Hydrogen project, backed by international investors & MoU's signed with Germany, the Netherlands, and the EU shows the power of collaboration. Similarly, Morocco’s ambitious Amun project, combining 15GW of wind and solar with hydrogen production, highlights how 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 can attract essential investment. Secondly, 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 is crucial. Africa must build the pipelines, ports, and logistics needed to export green hydrogen, particularly to energy-hungry markets in Europe and Asia. Accelerating projects like the Namibia-South Africa Green Hydrogen Corridor will be a game-changer for the continent’s export capacity. Lastly, 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰-𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 must continue driving early-stage projects. Investors are recognising the long-term benefits of green hydrogen, both for economic growth and environmental sustainability. As the competition for global capital intensifies, Africa’s ability to attract and maintain investment now will secure its leadership. Africa has the resources, but to truly lead the green hydrogen revolution, it must act swiftly, fostering collaboration, building infrastructure, and driving investment. The Moroccan government is getting ready to share about 1 million hectares of land for projects focused on making renewable energy. At first, they'll give out 300,000 hectares in chunks ranging from 10,000 to 30,000 hectares for different projects. Minister of Energy Transition, Laila Benali, thinks private investments are super important for Morocco to boost investments in renewables. Morocco's big goal is to become a top exporter of renewable hydrogen and cover its energy needs by 2030, which is about 4 TWh/year. Because it's close to Europe, Morocco is aiming to be the go-to place for hydrogen for the European Union. The joint venture between H2Accelerate member TotalEnergies and the Eren Groupe S.A., TE H2, together with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and A.P. Moller Capital, will launch the ‘Chbika’ project near the Atlantic coast in Morocco. This project aims to build 1GW of onshore wind and solar capacity to power the production of green hydrogen through the electrolysis of desalinated seawater. The green hydrogen will be converted into 200,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year for the European market. A preliminary contract for the land reservation for the ‘Chbika’ project was signed between the government of the Kingdom of Morocco and TE H2, along with its partners. This was done under the presidency of His Majesty King Mohammed VI of Morocco and His Excellency Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic, highlighting the importance of this agreement.
