🟣 Today is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ Standing in solidarity with 2S-LGBTQIA+ people is crucial. According to Stats Can, 59% of LGB+ individuals have been physically or sexually assaulted at least once since the age of 15, and nearly half of transgender individuals have reported being sexually assaulted. These alarming statistics highlight the urgent need for change and the importance of creating safe spaces for everyone. At the Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region, we are dedicated to providing support, education, and advocacy for 2S-LGBTQIA+ survivors of sexual violence. Join us in fighting against discrimination and violence. Speak out, educate yourself and others, and support 2S-LGBTQIA+ organizations like SPECTRUM Waterloo Region's Rainbow Community Space that are making a difference locally. 🌈 Today, we're going rainbow against LGBTQIA+ Discrimination on #IDAHOBIT! May 17 marks a significant moment in history - the day in 1990 when the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from the Classification of Diseases. Yet, despite strides forward, discrimination persists worldwide. In Australia: ➡️ 68% of LGBTQIA+ employees are not out to everyone at work. ➡️ 2 in 3 LGBTQIA+ youth experience abuse due to their identity. ➡️ 35% of LGBTQIA+ Australians have experienced verbal abuse in the past 12 months. Since its inception in 2005, #IDAHOBIT has become the ultimate rally, uniting millions globally to celebrate progress and throw some serious shade at discrimination. #HRAPFpublication🧵 HRAPF’s October 2024 violations report on violence and other human rights violations based on SOGIE since the #AHA23 came into force HRAPF handled 50 cases October, a reduction from the 72 cases handled in September. Of the 50 cases handled, 16 cases involved actions that directly targeted people for negative treatment based on their SOGIE representing 32% of all cases handled in October The number of cases in which persons were directly targeted due to their SOGIE has remained steady at 16 cases in both September and October 2024. The number of victims affected by these violations reduced from 27 persons in September, to 18 persons in October 2024. Of the 16 cases in which LGBT+ persons were specifically targeted for detrimental treatment in October 2024, 9 cases involved violence and threats of violence against persons based on their SOGIE, 4 were eviction cases and 3 were arrests on sexuality related charges. The Constitutional Court’s modification of the #AHA2023 has reduced some SOGIE-based violence, but provisions still in force continue to fuel violence and arrests against the LGBT+ community 🔗Link to full report➡️ https://lnkd.in/diYMAcH7

Transgender individuals are more likely to experience violence, including intimate partner violence. They are also more likely to experience homelessness, poverty, unemployment and other risk factors. These discriminations can increase their vulnerability to IPV or make them more dependent on an abusive partner. There also tend to be greater barriers to seeking and receiving help. Today, we pause to remember transgender victims of violence and strengthen our resolve to end that violence. #TransgenderDayofRemembrance

Today is the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia. From the United Nations Population Fund: "To spotlight the advances and challenges, the theme of the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia this year is: “No one left behind: Equality, freedom and justice for all.” Among the recent advances: Social and legal norms have shifted away from criminalizing LGBTQIA+ people and towards safeguarding their rights. Since 2019, 11 countries have legalized marriage equality. Since 2017, 13 countries have removed laws criminalizing LGBTQIA+ sexuality. Yet despite the progress, discrimination and stigma remain, leading to serious health disparities and other inequities. Dozens of countries still criminalize consensual same-sex relationships. In some places, LGBTQIA+ people could face the death penalty because of their identity, leaving them highly vulnerable to rights violations and with limited access to health services. And many political leaders are using polarizing policies and harmful rhetoric." This year on Zero Discrimination Day, UNAIDS is highlighting the urgent need to take action to end the inequalities surrounding income, sex, age, health status, occupation, disability, sexual orientation, drug use, gender identity, race, class, ethnicity and religion that continue to persist around the world. We can all play our part by calling out discrimination where we see it, by setting an example, or by advocating to change the law.
