🌿 Publication Alert: The bodily experiences of AYAs 🌿 I am honored to share our latest research, "‘There is still a part of me that would love to be the old me again’, how do adolescents and young adults (AYA) experience cancer-related bodily changes: a phenomenological interview study", now published in the Journal of Cancer Survivorship. https://lnkd.in/etBqd5dz This study is a profound exploration of the lived experiences of individuals facing the physical and emotional changes, brought on by cancer and following treatments. Embarking on this research, we- myself and my co-authors: Mies, Marjolein, Sophia, Dorry, Olga and Tom Bootsma, PhD, aimed to understand the essence of what it means to live through and beyond cancer. The courage and openness of our participants in sharing their stories have illuminated their complex journeys and profound challenges. Their experiences are a powerful call to action for more empathetic, inclusive, and holistic approaches in oncology and survivorship care. #CancerResearch #CancerSurvivorship #AYAS #PhenomenologicalStudy #Bodilyexperience #HealthcareInnovation #OncologyCare

On this European Day celebrated at IPOSummit, it is important to honor the relentless pursuit of science and research against cancer. Let's take a moment to celebrate the incredible strides made in cancer research and science ! The collective efforts across the continent, under initiatives like the EU Mission: Cancer, are a testament to our shared commitment to improving lives through innovation and collaboration ,as shared also today at #IPOSummit by Dr Christos Tsagkaris and also by Dr.#José Dinis Silva on the National Strategy to fight cancer where we are all activated to act. The goal to improve the lives of more than 3 million people by 2030 is ambitious, but we can all together reach it ,if the dedication of researchers, healthcare professionals, ecosystem partners and policymakers prioritize agenda for this. We won´t settle! #novartisresearch As per today´s presentation on the IPO Summit, #Son-Mi Park was shedding light on the latest advancements in theranostics and how it's shaping the future of patient care . It was an honor for us to contribute to such a pivotal discussion in healthcare and was really a very special way to celebrate European day ,and congratulate #IPOPorto for it´s half century caring for patients ! Cancer research, brings us closer to a future where cancer is no longer a battle, but a challenge overcome. #EuropeanDay #CancerResearch #novartisportugal #novartis

Switching perspectives... Yesterday, I had the great pleasure to organize a workshop on #patientinvolvement in #cancerresearch in the frame of the Cancer Core Europe Summer School together with Cinzia Colombo and Paola Mosconi, chaired by Priya Chudasama (who also took the photo). I first gave a short presentation on my personal journey from a basic cancer researcher at the DKFZ Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum to a cancer patient and eventually to a patient representative at the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg. And this journey has seriously switched my perspectives in the past 4.5 years. Specifically, I got to understand that if a drug is 'well tolerated' according to published literature, it doesn't have to be what I would consider well tolerated for a majority of patients/survivors (i.e. no impairments of quality of life). It was such a great and rewarding opportunity to share this switch with the 70 talented and open-minded young scientists coming from 30 different countries and various scientific backgrounds. It was a pleasure to see them discussing very actively about potential ways to implement patient involvement in different types of projects ranging from pre-clinical and #translational to #clinical cancer research. I would like to thank the organizers of the #CCESumSchool24 for giving us this awesome opportunity to raise #awareness for the benefits, but also the limitations of #patientadvocacy. Honestly, I was stunned by the comprehensive output these young researchers presented at the end of the workshop. If they only implement a small part of their suggestions in their future projects, it will already be a great step towards real patient partnership as it is envisioned for instance within the NCT Nationales Centrum für Tumorerkrankungen #OneNCT. I am looking forward to additional inspiring discussions about the topic in the upcoming days here! And to the boat trip later today, of course... Have I ever mentioned that I love my job? 💜

🧬 Our study, which involved collaboration with esteemed colleagues from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and The University of British Columbia, delves into the role of #SOX2 in the progression of breast and lung cancers. We found that an imbalance in SOX2 expression can significantly influence the growth, dissemination, and treatment resistance of these cancers. 👨🏫 This journey was challenging but incredibly rewarding. I want to express my deepest gratitude to a few individuals who have been instrumental in my academic journey. Firstly, Dr. Seyed Hassan Saadat, whose guidance has been invaluable not only in my academic endeavors but also in my personal development. Prof. Freddy Troost and Prof. Mireille Sthijns, who, although not directly involved in this paper, have played a crucial role in shaping my academic and professional journey. Mr. Colin Dohmen, whose valuable feedback and constructive criticism helped me realize my potential. Lastly, I want to sincerely thank Prof. Hamid Zand. Although I haven’t had the privilege of meeting him for over a decade, he was the one who planted the seed of scientific research in my mind during my undergraduate years. You can read our full paper here: https://lnkd.in/dNjJEWpA Do not hesitate to contact me if you need access to the article. #BreastCancer #LungCancer #SOX2 #Biomarkers #TargetedTherapy
