Our History The organization was founded in 1997 by four women with breast cancer who felt that this community’s assistance to women with their disease could be broader and more thoughtfully conceived. Specifically, these founders were moved by the pro-active approach and attitude of a close friend who had not survived. Goal 1 First, they envisioned a single site dedicated to women with breast cancer, a place where women would be treated with particular understanding of their needs with a medical team approach. Their vision, in addition to their fundraising efforts, contributed to the development of the Breast Care Center which Community Hospital of Monterey County (CHOMP) opened in 2002. Goal 2 Second they had helped each other with peer counseling through their early years with breast cancer. Their efforts contributed to the development of a Patient Navigator Program and several Cancer Support groups currently administered by the CHOMP Comprehensive Cancer Center and the American Cancer Society. Goal 3 The third objective of BCAG founders was educational, to supply relevant information about breast cancer to patients, survivors and their families through regular public meetings with guest speakers. 💝For those we have lost, for the survivors, and for those left behind... 💝 As we enter the month of October, this post is to raise awareness of breast cancer. #BreastCancer is the most commonly occurring cancer in Singapore, where 1 out of 13 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. 💝 What are some things we can actually do to raise awareness and minimise the effects of breast cancer? - Educate yourself and others of the risk factors so you can improve your health and reduce risk. - Support organisations that support the cause. - Get tested regularly. Although breast cancer can affect any age, it's suggested every 2-3 years for women aged 45-74. Early detection reduces the chance of it being fatal. 💝Cancer affects more than just the one diagnosed. According to Uncovering TNBC, the top 10 states with the highest percentage of Black female patients diagnosed with Triple-Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) are the following: 1. Mississippi 40% 2. Louisiana 36 % 3. Maryland 31% 4. South Carolina 30% 5. Illinois 26% 6. Alabama 24% 7. Georgia 24% 8. Virginia 22% 9. North Carolina 18% 10. New York 18% As Georgia ranks among the top ten states with the highest percentage of Black female patients diagnosed with TNBC, it underscores the importance of understanding TNBC and healthcare disparities and tailoring support to address the specific needs of our community.
