#truckdriver job vacancies have declined 33% in Q1 2024 compared to last year, according to the latest Trucking HR Canada national job vacancy update report. Driver vacancies across Canada are currently at 15,460, a decrease of 7,785 from Q1 2023, and #employment of drivers increased by 11.6%, adding 32,600 more drivers in Q1 compared to the same time last year. #truck #trucking #trucker #transportation #humanresources https://lnkd.in/gTdfRMek

You Deserve A Decent Job At A Decent Company. In today's trucking sector, drivers are beginning to leave trucking firms and, in some cases, their entire careers if the job isn't fulfilling them. They have the right to proper follow up driver training, fair treatment, enough salary, and respect. There are trucking businesses that prioritise their drivers' health and welfare, and they have established settings in which truckers feel respected. These are the firms most likely to recruit and retain outstanding drivers. This helps the driver, and hence the industry as a whole. As a professional truck driver, you should never assume you have to settle for your current employment. There is always something greater out there waiting for you.

I used to work in truck driver recruitment for the ag industry. The biggest problem... finding people who can reverse them. 🚛 Seriously, it doesn’t say that in the job ads, but it’s one of the primary reasons why trucking companies are looking for “experienced” drivers. Transport-industry wide, there are around 20,000 vacancies for truck drivers in Australia – it's a huge issue for those of us in logistics... and our stakeholders... which means pretty much everyone in the country. If you buy stuff, you need logistics. As you can see from this ABS chart, truck driver salaries have risen significantly – FT drivers can now earn between $120,000 - $150,000 – for what is classified as an unskilled role. One of the methods of solving the problem has been to recruit foreign nationals. They can fly into Brisbane, where the driving test is easier to pass, then they can drive B-doubles interstate right away. Unfortunately, Australian roads, conditions and distances are unlike anywhere else in the world, so when the rubber literally hits the road, inexperienced drivers can just add to the pressure (not a tyre joke). In my role I was looking for drivers with minimum 2 years experience – they'd learned how to reverse properly by that stage – and who were willing to be away from home for 6 days out of 7. It’s those sorts of conditions that see the average driver age heading north of 50. Young people don’t want to get their hands dirty and wear shearer’s singlets all the time – that stereotype persists. But those conditions are borne of the driver shortage. There’s plenty to unpack on this issue, again not literally, but 300 words is coming up fast, so I’ll oversimplify, and continue another time... If we can solve the driver shortage, then work conditions soften and the career becomes far more attractive.
