Happening now! Access Living, with the support of the Ford Foundation, has spent 18 months in conversation with survivors of gun violence in Chicago. Specifically, people who acquired disabilities due to gun violence. Today we launch our findings, both in conversation with Joanna Hernandez of WTTW, and with a white paper containing our data and other findings. We are invigorated to begin this important and, as the paper discusses in detail, vitally important work. As a disability organization, as a Center for Independent Living, and as an organization dedicated to disability justice, we are committed to furthering the independence and empowerment of these undeserved members of the disability community. “Nothing about us, without us” This motto has deeply resonated with me throughout my time so far as Disabled Student’s Officer. I ask my network to consider these questions: 🔎Have I included feedback from disabled individuals on projects to ensure their long-term accessibility and viability? 🔎Am I doing enough to be a Disability Ally and what can I improve on? 🔎Where can I make a difference to help support disabled individuals? Allyship and Inclusion are two very important principles that can make all the difference to the lives of disabled individuals. Access barriers exist everywhere, so we all must try to help identify and understand how we can best tackle these- we can learn only from the inclusion of disabled experiences! Watch my video on steps to becoming a better Disability Ally!👇🤔
Guild of Students on Instagram: "Disabled people often struggle to get their voices heard and often feel ignored, talked over, or have people speak for them. During Disability History Month, @guild_dso wants to spotlight the ways in which you can become a better disability ally 💙 #DisabilityHistoryMonth #GuildofStudents #University"
