Earlier in the week Google released its annual sustainability report. In the post accompanying the release, whilst acknowledging a 13% increase in GHG emissions in 2023, the company also highlighted the potential environmental attributes of accelerating AI deployment. In their view, ‘AI has the potential to help mitigate 5–10% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030.’ We believe it's important this narrative around potential climate attributes of AI does not distract from the negative emissions implications that could stem from a rapid build out of new HPC capacity. There appears limited scope for the firm baseload power demands of new hyperscaler capacity not being met by higher utilization of the existing fossil based generation fleet. Securing longer term data center load growth will also likely drive development of new build gas turbine capacity. (The above is for informational purposes only and is not investment advice)
