One of these things is not like the other… ⛳ Here’s a throwback to a memory that feels like a lifetime ago. Representing Ireland over in Italy, alongside two incredible teammates. One went on to with the British Amateur and has played in The Masters (jealous 😆) The other secured a coveted golf scholarship in the US and has also turned professional. James and Rowan are two class acts, on and off the course. And me? I took a slightly different path. I ventured into the world of crafting emails and retention strategies for #eCom brands. Fun, but probably not as fun as playing golf for a living. But, playing golf at an elite level taught me invaluable lessons about discipline and perseverance. The countless hours of practice. The focus is on every shot. The resilience to keep going, even when the game didn't go my way. These lessons have been invaluable in both my work and personal life. Learnings I’ve been able to lean upon when things didn’t go my way. Here's to embracing where we come from, the paths we've trodden, and the adventures that lie ahead. Swapping clubs for clicks, and greens for Google Meets. If you’re looking to up your email/SMS game, feel free to shoot me a DM or book a call. If you’re looking to fix your slice, I can probably give some unsolicited advice but I can’t guarantee it’ll work 🤣

Looking to level up your networking skills? Consider the power of golf! Here are 4 reasons why golf can enhance your professional connections: 1. Networking in a Relaxed Environment: Golf provides a laid-back atmosphere away from the office, making it easier to connect with clients and colleagues on a personal level. The casual setting fosters genuine conversations and strengthens professional relationships. 2. Building Trust and Rapport: Sharing a round of golf allows individuals to showcase their character, integrity, and sportsmanship—all essential qualities in business. By observing how someone handles the game, you can gain insights into their approach to business dealings, fostering trust and rapport. 3. Level Playing Field: Regardless of skill level, everyone has an equal opportunity to participate and contribute on the golf course. This equality promotes inclusivity and creates a comfortable environment where individuals can engage with each other without the barriers often present in traditional business settings. 4. Extended Networking Opportunities: A round of golf doesn't end when the final putt drops. The post-game activities, such as drinks at the clubhouse or dinner, provide additional opportunities for networking and relationship building. These moments off the course can be just as valuable as the time spent playing. Network like a pro with AMASV and SMPS Sacramento at Sip & Swing on Thursday, May 9th at Haggin Oaks Golf Course. I've seen a lot of talk about offering freebies if Neeraj Chopra wins gold—free visas, discounts, promotions. But now that he’s won silver, let’s pause and reflect. Why do we need to tie a phenomenal achievement to a marketing ploy? Neeraj Chopra is a champion, whether he wins gold, silver, or even comes close. His value isn't dependent on the color of his medal but on the hard work, dedication, and sportsmanship he embodies. Let’s also congratulate Arshad Nadeem on his well-deserved gold—he earned it with hard work and determination. We should celebrate sports for what it is—a realm where you may lose more times than you win, but every loss and every win is a testament to perseverance, resilience, and excellence. Making it about anything else diminishes that spirit. So, let's appreciate Neeraj's and Arshad's victories for what they truly represent, and not as an excuse for promotional stunts. Sports deserve respect, not gimmicks. PS -If you’re low on marketing budget, find creative ways to make an impact, but let’s keep sports pure. Respect the game and the athletes, no gimmicks needed.

Members must play their part. Technically speaking we are entering the last 10 weeks of the golf season here in Ireland. The kids are back to school, the evenings are getting shorter, social media is full of Cups and Shields presentations, and the Golfer of the Year title is all but done and dusted in most clubs. Accounts will be readied for the end-of-year Annual Meetings and there will be a general sense of what members can look forward to in 2025. Having worked at both a member’s club and a resort club, I feel strongly that this “general sense” outlook that an incoming Captain and their team can easily fall into, is a recipe for disaster and can lead to unnecessary stress and more significantly a loss of much-needed revenue solely down to a lack of planning. The members who are happy with the status quo must be challenged at every opportunity because as in most business entities; those who stand still are going backward. The fundamental decisions a club Captain must make revolve around committee personnel, the calendar of fixtures, and most importantly what went wrong in 2024 cannot be allowed to happen again next year. However, what went right must be supported if required and if not required, simply be left alone. For those of us based here in Mayo, we are all too aware of the dangers of poor decision-making and the Titanic consequences that can result if due diligence and forensic financial planning aren’t front and center when major developments are signed off on. Golfers pay their subscriptions for a certain level of service but they must never lose track of the fact that along with the necessity that the club committee must always act in their best interests, they too must play their part in contributing to the success of the club by their positive interactions on all golf related matters, at all times. The areas where members must play a supporting role are wide and varied but they all have one thing in common. Whether you volunteer to paint, plant or help park the cars when the club hosts events on behalf of Golf Ireland or the Irish PGA, your contribution will not only enhance your enjoyment of your involvement in the club but most importantly will further develop the positive standing your club has not only within the golf industry but also within the wider non-golfing community from which future members of your club will come. My opinion about member involvement might seem a little over-complicated, especially for what many will presume that the day-to-day routine that must exist at golf clubs is dull. In rebuttal, I would argue that one only has to scratch the surface of those clubs that are financially sound in Ireland to understand the importance of a forward-thinking club membership. If committee membership is not for you why not offer to plant a few daffodils or paint some club signage over the coming weeks?

Open Week is always important. Sporting gatherings of like-minded people are always important and play a vital role in the fabric of any society. It's an opportunity for competitors, supporters, and administrators to come together and embrace what they love as a form of escapism from the real world. Many sports have various ways of describing the aforementioned gatherings; the GAA has its championship, it's all about the league (as Brian Clough once said) in football and the Americans seem to be happy enough with a World Series finale, especially for unique sports that are only played at the highest level Stateside. The Open Week is special for golfers as it clearly outlines our intention to commit to a particular event even though play only begins on a Thursday. The term of course is very familiar to Irish amateur golfers as a club's Open Week is probably among the primary dates entered in the new calendar every January just after the President's Prize, the Lady Captain's Day, the Gent's Captain's Day, and the sacred Winter League. The term was nearly lost during the Celtic Tiger when several clubs began to get notions about their standing in the local sporting community, probably got involved with the horsey crowd, and went with a "Festival of Golf" campaign before copping on to themselves and returning to their roots. On a serious note, however, the success or failure of a club's Open Week can have far-reaching financial effects and in some cases will play a vital role in the following year's budget proposals. Members must play an ambassadorial role before and during Open Week by aggressively supporting the efforts of the competition committee. With daily competitions, members have no excuse in supporting these midweek events where their competition fees are minimal. They should also actively bring any posters to their workplace or neighbouring clubs encouraging golfers from around the locality to visit the club during Open Week. Members also have a duty to invite non-members in making up a fourball on at least one occasion where they can outline the benefits of their home club and hopefully cement new golf society business. My tone may be quite serious this week but specifically about parkland courses, the financial aspect is especially important. A successful Open Week can increase the budget for marketing, a unique dilemma as it seems Bord Failte is only interested in advising tourists about our links offering and our marquee parkland destinations. One would have thought that as these venues are easily making eye-watering green fee revenue, they might be able to look after their own marketing expenses but that discussion is for another time. Troon had its Open Week finish last Sunday night with the X-man named as the Champion Golfer of the Year. An unusual Major season for Irish golf with both McIlroy and Lowry grabbing defeat from the jaws of victory in both respective Open.

The match between Portugal and France last week was intense. We almost bet our money on Spain considering the stakes, but we were too late to place a bet. It was a missed opportunity and we would’ve won big money. 😅 Missing out on opportunities isn’t just limited to sports. In tracking user behavior, manually tagging every event can be a real headache. If you miss a crucial interaction, the whole report will be incomplete, leaving you with gaps in your data. Soon, you won’t have to tag any features at all to track every interaction. Keep an eye out for something new coming this month from Userpilot! 👀

You only have 1 chance to make a 1st impression - so make it a good one! - Do you have to meet International customers/suppliers, but English is not your 1st language, so you don't know what to say? 🚲 Don't worry, you're definitely not alone, and there are solutions... 🚲 A couple of important events are coming up soon in Europe: - Eurobike in Frankfurt, July 3rd-7th - Sea Otter Europe in Girona, September 20th-22nd - Plus too many other great events to mention 🚲 All are awesome opportunities to meet old friends, see new designs, check out the competition, etc... - They're also a great way to meet potential new customers, suppliers and others associated with the Bike Industry 🚲 Networking at these events can be crucially important for your company, it's highly likely you can meet with other people who can help you, or you can help them - But what if your knowledge of English is not up to the job? 🚲 You can make as many Business cards as you want with your contact details on them, but at some point you will have to speak English with someone! 🚲 I prepared a free guide on Networking in the Bike Industry, if English is not your 1st language - If you want to see it then DM me with the message 'Networking' and I'll send it you, it's as simple as that! - I hope it helps, and you have a successful time at the upcoming events - July is a busy exam period for me, so I can't make it to Frankfurt, but I hope to be in Girona for the Sea Otter Europe! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I'm a Business English coach for people in the Bike Industry, and a lifelong Bike fan. I post a lot on both topics, so follow or connect if you don't want to miss any updates!
