One of these things is not like the other… ⛳ Here’s a throwback to a memory that feels like a lifetime ago. Representing Ireland over in Italy, alongside two incredible teammates. One went on to with the British Amateur and has played in The Masters (jealous 😆) The other secured a coveted golf scholarship in the US and has also turned professional. James and Rowan are two class acts, on and off the course. And me? I took a slightly different path. I ventured into the world of crafting emails and retention strategies for #eCom brands. Fun, but probably not as fun as playing golf for a living. But, playing golf at an elite level taught me invaluable lessons about discipline and perseverance. The countless hours of practice. The focus is on every shot. The resilience to keep going, even when the game didn't go my way. These lessons have been invaluable in both my work and personal life. Learnings I’ve been able to lean upon when things didn’t go my way. Here's to embracing where we come from, the paths we've trodden, and the adventures that lie ahead. Swapping clubs for clicks, and greens for Google Meets. If you’re looking to up your email/SMS game, feel free to shoot me a DM or book a call. If you’re looking to fix your slice, I can probably give some unsolicited advice but I can’t guarantee it’ll work 🤣

I've seen a lot of talk about offering freebies if Neeraj Chopra wins gold—free visas, discounts, promotions. But now that he’s won silver, let’s pause and reflect. Why do we need to tie a phenomenal achievement to a marketing ploy? Neeraj Chopra is a champion, whether he wins gold, silver, or even comes close. His value isn't dependent on the color of his medal but on the hard work, dedication, and sportsmanship he embodies. Let’s also congratulate Arshad Nadeem on his well-deserved gold—he earned it with hard work and determination. We should celebrate sports for what it is—a realm where you may lose more times than you win, but every loss and every win is a testament to perseverance, resilience, and excellence. Making it about anything else diminishes that spirit. So, let's appreciate Neeraj's and Arshad's victories for what they truly represent, and not as an excuse for promotional stunts. Sports deserve respect, not gimmicks. PS -If you’re low on marketing budget, find creative ways to make an impact, but let’s keep sports pure. Respect the game and the athletes, no gimmicks needed.

Looking to level up your networking skills? Consider the power of golf! Here are 4 reasons why golf can enhance your professional connections: 1. Networking in a Relaxed Environment: Golf provides a laid-back atmosphere away from the office, making it easier to connect with clients and colleagues on a personal level. The casual setting fosters genuine conversations and strengthens professional relationships. 2. Building Trust and Rapport: Sharing a round of golf allows individuals to showcase their character, integrity, and sportsmanship—all essential qualities in business. By observing how someone handles the game, you can gain insights into their approach to business dealings, fostering trust and rapport. 3. Level Playing Field: Regardless of skill level, everyone has an equal opportunity to participate and contribute on the golf course. This equality promotes inclusivity and creates a comfortable environment where individuals can engage with each other without the barriers often present in traditional business settings. 4. Extended Networking Opportunities: A round of golf doesn't end when the final putt drops. The post-game activities, such as drinks at the clubhouse or dinner, provide additional opportunities for networking and relationship building. These moments off the course can be just as valuable as the time spent playing. Network like a pro with AMASV and SMPS Sacramento at Sip & Swing on Thursday, May 9th at Haggin Oaks Golf Course. Open Week is always important. Sporting gatherings of like-minded people are always important and play a vital role in the fabric of any society. It's an opportunity for competitors, supporters, and administrators to come together and embrace what they love as a form of escapism from the real world. Many sports have various ways of describing the aforementioned gatherings; the GAA has its championship, it's all about the league (as Brian Clough once said) in football and the Americans seem to be happy enough with a World Series finale, especially for unique sports that are only played at the highest level Stateside. The Open Week is special for golfers as it clearly outlines our intention to commit to a particular event even though play only begins on a Thursday. The term of course is very familiar to Irish amateur golfers as a club's Open Week is probably among the primary dates entered in the new calendar every January just after the President's Prize, the Lady Captain's Day, the Gent's Captain's Day, and the sacred Winter League. The term was nearly lost during the Celtic Tiger when several clubs began to get notions about their standing in the local sporting community, probably got involved with the horsey crowd, and went with a "Festival of Golf" campaign before copping on to themselves and returning to their roots. On a serious note, however, the success or failure of a club's Open Week can have far-reaching financial effects and in some cases will play a vital role in the following year's budget proposals. Members must play an ambassadorial role before and during Open Week by aggressively supporting the efforts of the competition committee. With daily competitions, members have no excuse in supporting these midweek events where their competition fees are minimal. They should also actively bring any posters to their workplace or neighbouring clubs encouraging golfers from around the locality to visit the club during Open Week. Members also have a duty to invite non-members in making up a fourball on at least one occasion where they can outline the benefits of their home club and hopefully cement new golf society business. My tone may be quite serious this week but specifically about parkland courses, the financial aspect is especially important. A successful Open Week can increase the budget for marketing, a unique dilemma as it seems Bord Failte is only interested in advising tourists about our links offering and our marquee parkland destinations. One would have thought that as these venues are easily making eye-watering green fee revenue, they might be able to look after their own marketing expenses but that discussion is for another time. Troon had its Open Week finish last Sunday night with the X-man named as the Champion Golfer of the Year. An unusual Major season for Irish golf with both McIlroy and Lowry grabbing defeat from the jaws of victory in both respective Open.

It was a very special night in a professional and personal capacity last night at the Irish Sponsorship Awards. An Outstanding Contribution Award does make you feel just a bit older, but sure, that's the trade-off for experience and a life of working with good people. I had three minutes to make a speech, so I chose to thank those who had all been part of the Sport for Business journey before sharing a few thoughts on how I feel life can be lived well by keeping the right balance between work and life. They seemed to go down well last night, so for what they might be worth ... Thanks to all of you who are members of Sport for Business or might be in the future. Honestly you have given me the opportunity to create and grow the absolute dream job combining all of whatever skills I might have, to shine a light on the brilliant work you do. I never wake up without a buzz of adrenaline for what today might bring, which is a gift you gave me. Work. Never be afraid to jump into the unknown. When I was 29, I was a Director of the Tote with a £2 million budget, world travel, and responsibility for the Cheltenham Gold Cup—the perfect job. But I jumped at the chance to come home to Ireland because I love the place. Never be afraid to make stupid mistakes. You will never fail if you never try, but it is worth it. Be a friend to those you work with. It’s always about people, how you treat them, and what that leads to. When you can, always say yes as your default. Take the time if someone is starting out and asking for coffee and advice. We lost a good man earlier this year, John Trainor of Onside. Many here will have known him, and as a result, many will have become better in what they do and who they are. He always took the time. Life In everything you do, try to be kind and to be the best version of yourself. Give your time, thoughts, and experience, ask for nothing in return, and you’ll find sooner or later that you get back far more than you imagined it might be worth. If you are a parent, never miss out on those critical parts of your children’s lives. They will remember you being there longer than you remember the call you had to take. Be present. If you are lucky to have still-living parents, tell them you love them—not on Instagram, but in person, with a hug. Again, you will never know until you know just what value there is in that. And lastly, find someone you love and make sure you hang onto them. My beautiful wife Elaine is here with me tonight. It’s our wedding anniversary. Today, 32 years ago, we danced around the Conrad Hotel, the happiest couple in the world. And we are still going strong. She gave me the courage to take a flyer on an unproven idea to try to make a difference. Thanks for this, but I would stress that it is an outstanding, not a lifetime, contribution award, and I’m not going anywhere other than wherever I can keep on playing a part among such wonderful people as all of you.

Second call-out for Jury Duty! Yesterday's call-out for jury self-nominations yielded a lot of great applicants. (Thanks to everybody who shared/commented on the post or applied!) But I'm seeing a heavy skew on folks from Ontario and agencies... ... and I'm looking for diversity on the jury, which includes (but is most certainly not limited to) geographical diversity and diversity of experience. So if you're an experienced client-side marketer, live outside of Ontario, belong to an underrepresented community, or all of the above... ... please consider throwing your hat in the ring! (You can do so by completing this form: https://lnkd.in/gzhehC8E) P.S. If you're not able to serve on the Jury yourself but know somebody who would be perfect for the job, please tag them in this post and encourage them to apply! #marketing #legend #jury

Can you spot a Legend? If so, I need your help... I'm honoured to serve as the 2025 Jury Chair for Canada's Marketing Hall of Legends. As part of my role, I'm responsible for choosing a diverse group of exceptional jury members to review all nominations received and determine who will be inducted into Canada's Marketing Hall of Legends next year. I'm fortunate to know a lot of exceptional people who I know would make exceptional jury members... ... but in an effort to find exceptional people beyond my existing network, I'd like to solicit self-nominations to be considered. Jury members should have: ✨ 25+ years of work experience in marketing and/or branding, and ✨be available to meet in person (if you're in the Greater Toronto Area) or virtually (outside of the GTA) to deliberate nominations on January 31, 2025. If you'd like to be considered, please take a moment to complete this form: https://lnkd.in/gKsv2v-K If you know someone who'd be a perfect fit for the 2025 jury, please tag them in the comments and encourage them to complete the form. Finally, if you know a Legendary Marketer who you believe should be inducted into Canada's Marketing Hall of Legends next year, please nominate them using this form: https://lnkd.in/gRV5mGCV Thanks for your help in sharing this post with the exceptional people in your networks! cc: American Marketing Association (AMA), Toronto, Roberta Biondic, Amy Corman, Olga Pigeon #Marketing #HallofLegends #Jury #Nomination

It’s 5.34am in the morning as I sit here in Spain, so only 4.34am back home in the UK, a little early to start sending out emails then, so thought I’d write a LinkedIn post instead. I’ve come to Spain for specific reasons. 1. To get some Winter Sun on my back. 2. Get a good hard week of physical training in (I have my first Men’s Physique Show in six weeks time, so I brought my coach with me). 3. To spend time with my Business Partners (Yes, I’ve brought some of them out with me), creating the vision for the next three years. 4. To write the Business Plan for my new tech company coming to market in October 2024 (exciting). 5. Prepare my daughter for her up and coming boxing match (Regional Final) on March 3rd. 6. To spend some quality time reading. As you can see, it’s not really a holiday but more like a retreat/camp and I’m loving every minute of it. The importance of bringing everyone away cannot be understated. The conversations, ideas, ambitions are in full flow and no matter how hard you try to do this back home, it’s so much easier in the sunshine. I feel alive 😁 Oh, the books. I’ve just finished reading High Performance. Can’t recommend it enough, it had me glued from the first page. Now to start The Diary of a CEO, I quite like Steven Bartlett so I’m hoping to get more inspiration from this. Anyone read it? Right, plans for the day ahead. 8am - Training Session 1 with my coach 12pm- Zoom Meeting with Events Management Company to discuss the Care Business Associate Training conference I’m putting together in November 1pm- Zoom Meeting with Designer Ken O'Hare to discuss Logo & Branding for new tech company. 3pm - Interview with The Great British Care Awards for the National Finals where I’m up for Workforce Development Partnership after winning the Regionals. 5pm - Training Session 2 (Cardio) 6.30pm - Take Gracie to the top Spanish Boxing Gym for a few sharpening rounds. 8pm - Dinner with the Business Partners to discuss Marketing. Its going to be a jam packed day, but I love it 😁 Tomorrow is even better, I’m taking them all out on the golf course ☀️

2024 & still Climbing 📈 Since 2008 we have excelled in increasing golf outings, memberships & rounds per year. As a semi-private profitable club these are 3 key ingredients. In this post I am just talking vaguely about golf outings & membership, but ultimately hope to get others to engage in this industry on this topic. As a GM, Pro, or event coordinator- What are the tools that you find to help your club grow. Times are changing, outings are looking for more attractive sponsorship activation opportunities, more fun, and a smooth process. Our job is to make this process as smooth as possible. We need to stay innovative to accomplish these things. I.e investing into the club itself, educating ourselves on what is out there in the market and staying open-minded. These thought processes correlate with membership as well. Are you building a community/brand with your club? How well are we doing with connecting our staff with our members/clients? I see many gaps in this field when I visit other clubs, talk to other pros, or even when I book a new golf outing from a different club. If these are gaps you are expierancing reach out to me.
