I love The Walt Disney Company. The idea of blue skies in design inspires me. Making space for creative thinking and collaborative discussion can be the backbone of #STEM and #entrepreneurship. In my new position at JASON Learning, I have the opportunity to design curricula focused on many different areas of STEM. This week, I've been focusing on #CTE curricula and learning about accounting, financial literacy, and emerging technologies. I love the beginning phases of the development process, where we make space to think and then dream. What are you working on this week? Are you in Walt Disney's think, dream, believe, or dare phase?

Back-to-school is a big moment for my family as my husband goes back to graduate school to pursue his MFA in fine arts. This weekend he packed up his art studio and moved to his new graduate school studio. Classes start tomorrow. Wow - it’s all happening so fast. It is a huge life change at all ages, and if you’re a parent, there’s special considerations. Similar to big work changes, landmark projects, product pivots, etc, communication and planning well can help make change feel lighter: (1) Stay focused on the goals Why do we want to take-on this massive undertaking? Is there an alternative with smaller, cheaper components but similar results? What are the tangible and intangible outcomes we desire? How do these outcomes relate to our values and vision for our future? (2) Stay aligned with the team that matters Coming from a “hard” science and math background, aligning with my husband about his art career took a lot of intentional effort simply because the value systems are so different. This is similar to engineers or data scientists aligning with design or marketing functions - it’s hard but hugely rewarding to invest time doing this before stretch assignments start so that you can focus on getting things done when you’re in the middle of it. (3) Believe in the best outcome Signing yourself up for a stretch project will feel daunting, and at times stupid. Most of the time, believing that the dream outcome is achievable will keep you excited on the good days, and pick you up on the bad days. #backtoschool #laborday #teamwork #stretchassignments #crossfunctionalcollaboration #worklifebalance #productmanagement

When it comes to publishing, sometimes when it rains, it pours. I'm thrilled to announce that our team has recently published 4 new articles on a variety of our projects. The first one I'll share centers on the inspiring Build a Better Book Project. BBB (started by CU Science Discovery in 2016) is a nationwide network of Maker Spaces that engages learners in empathy-centered engineering design. Through BBB, hundreds of youth have used maker technology to design books, games, and toys that are accessible for blind and low vision (BLV) children. Our new publication, "Engineering With Empathy in the Build a Better Book Project: Meaningful Making Supports STEM Participation", is a snapshot of the project's evolution. It reflects on both theory and practice, including how early experiences shaped our current research to expand a more in-depth model for empathy-driven engineering internships that get needed BLV-accessible products in the hands of children, all while building teen interns' engineering identities. I couldn't be prouder of the BBB team at CU (including Stacey Forsyth, Kathryn Penzkover, PhD, Tim Ogino, and Gigi Yang) and our research work with them (including Angelina Ong).
