WARNING: Are Genetically Engineered Soil Microbes A Risk to Our Food System? #Mysummary A new report from Friends of the Earth warns about the potential risks of genetically modified (GM) soil microbes for agriculture. The Report states that Biotech and agrichemical companies have developed commercially available GM microbe products. "An application of GM bacteria could release approximately 3 trillion genetically modified organisms every half an acre — that’s about how many GM corn plants there are in the entire US". 95% of the food we eat comes from soil. Understanding the complexity of this type of ecosystem is crucial to finding the best way to improve it. The report closes by mentioning that GM soil microbes pose potential risks to health, environment, and socioeconomic factors, and therefore require robust assessment and oversight. #Mythoughts GM microbes are not a first and will not be the last thing we hear. Today, and with the availability of cutting-edge genetic editing tools like CRISPR, you can make a GM microbe overnight and in your kitchen! But, should we be worried? To be fair, microbes share genetic information with each other all the time in nature, in soil, or even in our guts! What worries these experts is the type of genetic information that is being shared. For example, if we have a soil GM microbe that increases corps resistance to specific pests and that microbe travels, with wind, to a different land, meets a different microbe, gives it some DNA, and out of nowhere this new microbe is now killing all the bees! I think it is appropriate to say that we need more research to measure all the consequences and weigh the benefits/risk ratios!
