IMO is establishing a new Regional Presence Office in Suva, Fiji, to cater to the Pacific Islands region. The focus will be on addressing maritime needs, providing advice on key maritime issues, and facilitating technical cooperation to enhance global presence and collaboration with Pacific Member States. Suva will be the seventh Regional Presence Office for IMO, complementing existing ones in different regions. The first modern rounding of the cape by the portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias was a significant jump towards establishing direct trade relations with the “Far East”. This southernmost point of Africa opened a new sea route connecting Europe to Asia, spurring far-reaching effects on global trade, power dynamics, and cultural exchange, shaping the world as we know it today.  The discovery not only shifted the dynamics of international trade but also highlighted Africa's strategic importance in maritime navigation.
