Another great article featuring David '5-1' Norman talking about the volatile trends in ticket sales, which trickles down and affects the touring industry pros, gig crew and companies supporting the tour, not to mention the fans without unlimited entertainment budgets. And Jarred Arfa nailed it, "Concert promotion is a betting business. You don't always win. And sometimes, you can be humbled." Our regular Friday doomscrolling find: Is this the End of Coachella? "Plagued by low ticket sales and hellish logistics, the once-dominant California festival is starting to lose its luster." Coachella had long ago stopped being about the music. Other than the headliner's Half Time show-like performances, and maybe some surprise reunions, it was about being seen there and the vibe more than anything. And tastes change. So on top of this article's thoughts about the headliners (good thoughts BTW), how much of this is just the audience has moved on and younger audiences are building their own experience? Maybe certain festivals (Lollapalooza) survive due to their urban locations and ease of access - and due to the focus still being the music. (It helps that it pulls a huge range of musical acts). Coachella isn't that - tickets are expensive, it's hard to get to, trying to make it easier to get to is expensive ($154 for a shuttle pass on top of the tickets??). This might not be such a surprise. https://lnkd.in/e4znDucx #letsmakeplans #experiencedesign #entertainment #livemusic #themedentertainment

Great article by my team here at the SCSN!
Shake to the Beat: Exploring the Seismic Signals and Stadium Response of Concerts and Music Fans #SRL Seattle may have experienced its own Swift Quake last July, but at an August 2023 concert, Taylor Swift’s fans in Los Angeles gave scientists a lot of shaking to ponder. After some debate, a research team led by Gabrielle Tepp of Caltech concluded that it was likely the dancing and jumping motions of the audience at SoFi Stadium—not the musical beats or reverberations of the sound system—that generated the concert’s distinct harmonic tremors. In their study, Tepp and colleagues show how they were able to identify the seismic signature of individual songs and determine the strength of each song’s tremor. They even have a little bit of data on how Swift’s concert stacks up—seismically, that is—against other Summer of 2023 SoFi concerts, including Metallica, Beyoncé and Morgan Wallen. For more about their findings, please check out the paper and accompanying press release. Paper: https://lnkd.in/gGR5psMx Press Release: https://lnkd.in/gSBZW3My
