#CLTthrowbackpic from the Cape Leopard Trust archives ~ such a stunning sunshine shot of a caracal from our Little Karoo survey back in 2011! Some people still call this striking red cat ‘lynx’, but this is a misnomer. Caracals (rooikat ~ 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘢𝘭) are native to Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, and arid areas of Pakistan and northwestern India. ‘Lynx’, on the other hand, refers to the bobcat (native to the USA) as well as the Canadian lynx (Canada and Alaska), Eurasian lynx (Europe, central Asia and Siberia) and Iberian lynx (Iberian peninsula in southern Europe). #CamTrapChronicles #CLTcreaturefeature #caracal #rooikat

Friday Fact! Did you know the Ancient Egyptians were among the first to use landmarks as aids to navigation along the River Nile? Temples, obelisks, and statues served as visual guides for sailors, ensuring safe passage through the river's winding course. Safety of navigation has come a long way since then and today seafarers in many parts of the world are able to rely on a sophisticated network of technology-driven aids, including lighthouses, buoys and GPS. Functioning AtoNs have revolutionised navigation by enabling ships to pinpoint their exact location with unparalleled accuracy, regardless of weather conditions or visibility. Supporting the increase of the AtoN coverage worldwide is one of IFAN’s core objectives. #AidstoNavigation #AtoN #maritimesafety #RiverNile #FridayFact

Did you know Amur leopards are probably the rarest big cat in the world Listed as critically endangered since 1996, in 2022, 125 adult Amur leopards were identified in Russia and 46 in China in 2019. However, the Amur Leopard population in the wild seems to be stable and increasing. Amur leopards’ population trends indicate that populations are recovering in both China and Russia, and there’s potential for further expansion. Camera trap analyses have shown that Amur leopards move between Russia and China, so it’s difficult to determine a total population estimate. They have spots like fingerprints Like humans have unique fingerprints, amur leopards have unique spot patterns which means that we can identify them individually. They own both a summer and winter wardrobe the hairs of its summer coat are 2.5cm long but in winter they are replaced by 7cm long ones. The Orion Constellation Legend: In the sky, the constellation of Orion represents the giant hunter, depicting him, according to some, intent on facing the charge of Taurus, armed with a club (in the right hand) and a shield (in the left hand), according to others, armed with a club and with a lion's skin. The wisers all agree that, after his death, Orion was placed in the sky where it forms the Constellation of Orion, the brightest in the Northern Hemisphere. An imaginary line, passing through the stars of the Belt of Orion and extending to the southeast, meets the star Sirius of the constellation of the Greater Dog, Orion's faithful companion. (This picture was taken throughout the passage in the Atlantic Ocean). #MaritimeIndustry #Shipping #MarineTechnology #MaritimeInnovation #OceanTransportation #PortsAndTerminals #MarineEngineering #MaritimeLogistics #MaritimeTrade #NavalArchitecture #Seafarers #MaritimeSafety #Oceanography #MaritimeLaw #MarineEnvironment #MaritimeEducation #MaritimeHistory #Shipbuilding #MaritimeEconomics #MaritimeSecurity #CruiseShipDepartures #ThrusterControl #MaritimeMastery #JourneyOfDiscovery #PassionForTheSea #career #ocean #maritime #cruise #merchantship #captain #chiefofficer #travel #onboard #employee #company

Carol Cotton, a licensed NAUI scuba instructor, expeditioner, and professional photographer worked on a scientific research expedition in the Antarctic with a Mesa 4 Rugged Tablet. Here's what she had to say about the work conditions: "When you use your gear in really, really tough environments you quickly appreciate good design. It had been snowing, it was brutally cold on the zodiac and that much colder in the water, which was actually below freezing." Read about how Carol was able to effectively get the job done with a Juniper Rugged device in the most recent article from Rugged PC Review. #RockSolidFieldReady #RuggedTablet #Mesa4

The Strait of Gibraltar, also known as (The Pillars of Hercules), is a narrow sea passage that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea and separates the Iberian Peninsula in Europe from North Africa. It has an approximate length of 60 km and a minimum width of 14 km. This strait has historically been of great strategic importance, both commercially and militarily, due to its location that controls access between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. The Strait of Gibraltar is also known for its marine biodiversity, including the presence of several species of cetaceans. The currents in the strait are complex, with a surface flow of Atlantic water entering the Mediterranean and a deep flow of Mediterranean water leaving the Atlantic. In geopolitical terms, the waters of the strait are under the jurisdiction of Spain and Morocco, with the British enclave of Gibraltar situated on its northern shore.
