A well deserved break is coming in three weeks time for a lot of teaching staff. We applaud your hard work and dedication. 6 weeks goes quickly so make sure you plan days to do absolutely nothing. Why Seafaring is the Loneliest Job? Seafaring is more than just a job, it’s a sacrifice. Every time a seafarer leaves for the sea, they leave behind family, missing important moments like birthdays and anniversaries. The ocean, while beautiful, reminds them of the long distance from home. For months, they work in isolation, with only the sound of waves for company. Even hearing their family's voice becomes a rare moment. But they keep going, driven by the thought of reuniting with their loved ones. Yet, the hardest part is that once they finally come home, their time is short. Soon, they must leave again, heading back to the sea. Seafarers endure this loneliness to provide for their families, making their sacrifices a quiet but powerful act of love. To all seafarers: we see you, we appreciate you, and we wait for your safe return.

𝙄 𝙢𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙜𝙤 𝙙𝙤𝙬𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙨 𝙖𝙜𝙖𝙞𝙣, 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙨𝙚𝙖 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙠𝙮, 𝘼𝙣𝙙 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙄 𝙖𝙨𝙠 𝙞𝙨 𝙖 𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙖 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙧 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙚𝙧 𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙗𝙮. Life at sea, was so wonderfully romanticised by poet laureate John Edward Masefield, in his poem Sea Fever. However, the stark reality for a seafarer is very far from this beautiful rendition. Mariners make tremendous sacrifices in their personal and professional lives, actions that have drastic long-term impacts on them. Following is a list of hardships faced, while they serve at sea to make our lives better: • Seafarers often spend months at sea, missing important family moments and milestones, with limited communication, which deepens their sense of isolation. • Loneliness, stress, and long working hours contribute to fatigue and mental health challenges, including depression and burnout. • Seafarers face dangerous conditions, from extreme weather to piracy, and have limited access to healthcare while at sea, making illnesses or injuries more serious. • Many seafarers work on short-term contracts with uncertain job prospects, and they often face wage delays or low pay, affecting their financial stability. • Prolonged absences put pressure on marriages and family relationships, making it hard to parent or stay connected with loved ones. • Seafarers often face inadequate labour rights and legal recourse due to the international nature of the industry. Many of us in commercial shipping would hardly relate to the challenges encountered by this large faceless workforce of men and women, that form the backbone of global trade. This post is a small effort to highlight, that behind every voyage lies the unseen sacrifice of seafarers, carrying not just cargo, but the weight of their hopes, dreams, and the hearts they leave behind! #MaritimeHeroes #ShippingChallenges #LifeAtSea #MaritimeCommunity

Two years ago, VIKAND, with the support of numerous maritime organisations, launched the Seafarers' #HumanSustainability Declaration. This initiative aims to recognise and enhance the quality of life for seafarers, who spend months at sea, away from their families. In a recent interview by the IMPA - The International Marine Purchasing Association, VIKAND's CEO, Peter Hult, discusses the wellbeing of these essential workers is critical—not just for them, but for all of us. #Seafarers' mental and physical health, safe work environments, and family support are crucial for sustaining global trade and commerce.
