There is only one path to a sustainable energy-mobility system: electric and clean, with a few exceptions for non-electric clean. Support only the companies that take it. There is a concerted campaign against electric vehicles, cars in particular, we need to defeat it. For those behind this campaign, please accept that it is the end of ICE, the end of fossil fuels, we are moving on to a much better technology, as we cannot continue to destroy the biosphere. For those who want to solve the climate emergency, but claim that electric cars are not part of the solution, I challenge you to provide a substitute that is available now. I also challenge you to learn about any mobility technology, any technology for that matter, that is considered a solution to the climate emergency, before you make any statements about it.
We are at a pivotal moment and the world cannot afford for electrification to fail. The EU 2035 target for 100% zero-emission new cars is crucial to align all stakeholders toward sustainable innovation and future-proof investments. Electrification is the single biggest action our industry can take to cut its carbon footprint. The 2035 target is crucial to align all stakeholders on this journey and ensure European competitiveness. We urge EU policy makers to focus on what actions we need to take to get there, rather than reopening legislation just agreed on. The EU Green Deal has laid a solid foundation to curb emissions, while attracting long-term investment in Europe. With global EV competition intensifying, Europe must stay committed to the vision. Policy makers must avoid reopening legislation that could undermine this progress. Volvo Cars has joined key industrial companies and organisations from across the automotive, clean tech, transport and energy ecosystem, to urge EU policymakers, to uphold the recently adopted car and van CO2 standards and maintain the 2035 target for 100% zero-emission vehicles. Electrification is the single biggest value revolution for the auto industry. Why? It let's auto OEMs into the energy vertical. EVs, their batteries and V2G change a 100yr old power imbalance with oil. Almost all the profits have been made by oil cos and OPEC cartel countries (other than big tech or pharma no one else comes close). Yet there are more jobs and business risks taken designing and manufacturing said cars. This printer-ink business model paradox comes from the device not functioning without the consumable. For car owners and the auto OEMs it is a serfdom, an unbreakable bond. The OEMs have a ONE time profit at the point of a new car sale. Meantime the fossil fuel cos make a LIFETIME of profits with every refilling of the tank whether it be the cars 1st or 10th owner! The redux of a century of the tail wagging le dog is: >>> ONE time vs a LIFETIME of revenue & profits! <<< Which end of the stick sounds better? Plus the oil and gas sector is one of the most subsidised in history, and yet auto cos have to share in all the negative carry of facilitating the climate emissions and air pollution too! EVs and electricity instead offer many more options, with 3x energy-to-kinetic efficiency. V2G EVs solve fragile grid issues, delay huge CAPEX spends and offer distributed energy storage, resilience and earn for owners too. Ask NIO about their profits from VPPs! Not to mention the geopolitical costs too many proxy oil wars this last century and the urgency to turn the climate crisis tanker around! As a former investor in the auto sector, I can't fathom why more OEMs don't embrace freeing themselves from their fossil fuel shackles and leap into a brighter, more profitable self determined future. "But EVs are loss making money pits" - only to those who haven't committed, spent the R&D, organised their supply chains or got the support of national industrial strategy and policymakers. Take Tesla funded directly by legacy OEMs buying +$10bn in credits from them to offset their ICE car sales. Meantime they built a business that makes 3-4x profits of ICE OEMs even with their USA born EVs. While 15yrs ago China saw massive energy security risk from ICE cars, with the dual opportunity to move up the value chain and build the expertise and the supply chain vertical to a new transport category. They also had no fossil fuel cos to be beholden to, subsidise, pollute public discourse or shape policy. Delaying the process of switching fuel tracks by extending ICE phase out dates won't protect legacy OEMs. It will only feed the gap of not committing, getting the expertise and economies of building at scale, investing in innovation and reforming the supply chain for an electrified future. Thoughtful discourse welcomed. #NetZero2030 #electrifyfaster Dr. Andy Palmer CMG Dan Caesar Quentin Willson Ian Muller 🌎 Ben Scott Bill Esterson James Carter Dr Isobel Sheldon OBE DSc (h.c) Imogen Bhogal Roger Atkins Dale Vince RenewableUK

Wow, today was really all about Decarbonizing Transportation! 🌍 In the morning I joined a conference by ACEA and Euractiv and had a valuable exchange with Camilla Dewoon, Kristian Schmidt and Harald Seidel on how to decarbonize heavy-duty road transport in Europe as fast as possible. 🚛 In the afternoon, we celebrated the start of series production for our Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 in Wörth. With a range of 500+ kilometers, this battery-electric truck can really make a difference as it is a great solution for the long-haul segment in Europe, which accounts for around two-thirds of CO2 emissions from heavy road freight transportation. The fact that we are producing our eActros 600 alongside our conventional diesel trucks is a testament to the engineering expertise in our plant in Wörth. Our other locations contribute to our latest masterpiece as well, as important components are provided by our sites in Kassel, Gaggenau and Mannheim. 🔧 💪 ⚡ A call to action for infrastructure: I took the opportunity at both events to appeal to all stakeholders that we must pull together to remove this roadblock. We need a suitable infrastructure for both battery-electric and hydrogen-powered trucks and we need more initiatives now.
