Check out this new CNN story on Whale Personhood! In March 2024, Indigenous leaders from across the Pacific signed the He Whakaputanga Moana (Declaration for the Ocean) treaty, recognising Whales as legal persons with inherent rights. This initiative, spearheaded by the Māori of New Zealand and supported by leaders from the Cook Islands, Tahiti, Tonga, Hawaii, and Easter Island, aims to safeguard these magnificent creatures from threats like pollution, unsustainable fishing, and climate change. 🔗 Read more on CNN: Whale personhood on CNN: https://lnkd.in/gkWNz2Em 🌊In that article I shared that “assigning Whales personhood doesn’t mean they have the same rights as humans.” Rightfully so, there are questions and concerns regarding 'legal personhood' and some countries have expressed that they cannot accept Nature can have legal personality. This is such an important information gap to address. Providing the legal understanding in ways all can understand is vital to shifting minds and values and scaling this movement. Ocean Vision Legal will publish an in depth blog on this soon- so stay tuned and make sure you are following our page! 🌊This momentous initiative lends further credence to the growing and innovative movement towards international recognition of the Ocean’s Rights. We are gearing up to publish a central hub for Ocean Rights very soon. You do not want to miss this!

As populations grow and the impacts of climate change continue to increase, there is an urgent need to unite around protecting and conserving water, one of our most precious resources. This #WorldWaterDay, the IRF recognises the vital link between water and peace, and the important role that transboundary cooperation plays in supporting social, economic and environmental prosperity. The IRF, in collaboration with Global Environment Facility and Mekong River Commission Secretariat, published a video highlighting the necessity of transboundary river cooperation to ensure the ongoing protection and resilience of the world’s rivers and waterways. 💧 In this video, the Global Environment Facility’s CEO Carlos Manuel Rodriguez highlights the positive impact that transboundary river organisations like the ICPDR have on their rivers and surrounding communities. 🤝 The Mekong Rivers Commission’s CEO Dr Anoulak Kittikhoun speaks about whole of basin cooperation as one of the four fundamental shifts needed to transform the Mekong River. We must accelerate efforts to work together across borders. Let’s use cooperation as a tool to achieve peace and security for our rivers. 📜 A draft of a possible additional UNTOC Protocol is now available in Portuguese, as well as English, French, Spanish, Chinese (simplified and traditional), Vietnamese and Italian. Our most sincere thanks to Freeland Brasil and Juliana Ferreira for making this possible. The draft was prepared by EWC in 2020 in response to questions from several States on what the possible content of Protocol could look like, in order to help advance discussions. It is an informal working draft and it has no status other than to help advance a discussion on the possible content of a Protocol amongst States. EWC has already received a number of comments on how it could be further enhanced. 👉 Click here to read the draft in 7 languages: https://lnkd.in/gfwnPtw #EndWildlifeCrime
