Today our Senior Government Affairs Manager, Stefano Romanelli, attended the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2024 Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). 🦠 This high-level meeting tried to answer questions on how we can stimulate #research and #development (R&D) of new #antibiotics and sustainable #access to existing antibiotics. 🤝 It was stressed that the fight against #AMR demands collaborative actions from all stakeholders. 🔬 To address the challenges in antibiotic #innovation and production, political commitment is essential across the research-to-access spectrum. An effective strategy should integrate both push and pull #incentives, encompassing #EU, multi-country and national approaches with allocated funds and clear targets. Member States must establish a predictable and sustainable ecosystem through economic incentives and innovative #reimbursement models, tailored to national needs and epidemiological contexts. 🎯 Any EU pull incentives should support #patient access while minimising requirements and administrative burdens, particularly for smaller #companies. It is crucial to involve #industry in the discussions on access to antibiotics, to understand specific national challenges in access when developing National Action Plans.

Last week the International dialogue on sustainable financing for NCDs and mental health took place, an important milestone as we head towards the UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs and Mental Health taking place next year. In this blog I share my reflections on the meeting and some of the key elements required to increase funding for NCDs.

Investors can currently sign-on to the Investor Action on Antimicrobial Resistance (IAAMR) initiative’s public statement! 💸 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞? One way the Access to Medicine Foundation catalyzes change is by engaging institutional investors, such as asset managers, banks and financial institutions. As part of the Investor Action on AMR initiative, our investor partners have committed to adopt an AMR lens when making investment decisions and/or engaging with portfolio companies. Currently, more than 142 institutional investors, accounting for a total of USD 22 trillion in assets under management, have joined this community. We welcome the publication of Mario Draghi's (former President of the European Central Bank) report on EU competitiveness, presented today to the European Commission, and to which our organisation was invited to contribute. Launched today: pioneering report from WHO Regional Office for Europe showing that four major industries: tobacco, ultra-processed foods, fossil fuel and alcohol - cause 19 million deaths annually AND that these industries use corporate interference strategies such as lobbying to obstruct public policies that could hurt their profits. In Europe these industries cause 2,7 million deaths per year - that is 7000 (!) people per day and WHO now urges countries to fight back by enforcing stronger regulations on the marketing of unhealthy products, monopolistic practices and lobbying. The report "Commercial determinants of noncommunicable diseases in the WHO European Region" is launched at a day-long forum on Commercial Determinants of NCDs (noncommunicable diseases) in Brussels by the Belgian Minister of Social Affairs and Public Health, Mr Frans Vandenbroucke. Yesterday, countries have adopted the AMR political declaration that sets out a target to reduce deaths associated with bacterial AMR annually by 10% by 2030. The declaration also calls for US$100 million in catalytic funding, and sets out ambitious targets, including: - At least 70% of antibiotics used for human health globally should belong to the WHO Access group antibiotics. - 100% of countries should have basic water, sanitation, hygiene and waste management services in all health care facilities - 90% of countries should meet all WHO’s minimum requirements for IPC programmes by 2030. Now it’s time to deliver. Hope the upcoming interministerial meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia will help us move from “declaration to implementation”.

As the UN General Assembly convenes to talk about antimicrobial resistance (AMR) this week, we have several exciting AMR developments to share with you! We've joined the Fleming Initiative as a founding partner alongside Cepheid and Optum to tackle the global threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The Fleming Initiative is a collaborative, bold new approach focused on addressing the unmet and emerging needs in AMR that no single organisation or isolated research efforts can solve alone. By working together, we aim to address the drivers of AMR, develop global networks of expertise, and outline key research themes to accelerate vital solutions. We will contribute £25 million and will also harness our expertise in drug discovery, intellectual property management and technology transfer to help fight this critical global health problem.
