#ICYMI: The EPA awarded $4.3. billion in funding to help states and municipalities advance climate initiatives to reduce pollution, spur economic growth, and create local jobs in communities across the country. Nature-based Solutions intended to help address #climatechange are typically compared to technical solutions that have the same goal, such as building out renewable energy, installing carbon capture technology at fossil fuel power plants or other carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) projects. However, technical solutions typically do not provide other co-benefits like #adaptation to physical climate risks, improving #biodiversity, improving #ecosystemservices like fresh water resources or improving other aspects of #humanhealth like wellbeing or recreation. *WE GOT THE GRANT* We are excited to announce that we have received funding through the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program, administered by the Office of State and Community Energy Programs. Sun Prairie is among over 2,700 eligible states, territories, local governments, and tribes selected to receive a portion of over $430 million in formula funding aimed at addressing the specific clean energy needs of communities serving more than 250 million Americans The City has been awarded $76,190 in total, which will fund three interconnected projects aimed at reducing emissions. 1. Greenhouse Gas Inventories: Develop two inventories to quantify direct and indirect emissions from city operations, including fleet vehicles, building fuel combustion, employee commuting, waste generation, and more. A broader inventory will cover emissions from local businesses, residential properties, and transportation. 2. 2030 and 2050 Emission Reduction Goals: Set science-based goals aligned with IPCC and Paris Agreement recommendations, considering city growth, human development index, and carbon budget. 3. Climate Action Plan: Develop strategies to reduce emissions, enhance climate resilience, and promote sustainability, incorporating community input and effective reduction strategies.
