World Resources Institute and Georgetown University have partnered to develop the Science-based Targets for Faith Technical Guidance Document – the first resource of its kind created to empower faith actors around the world with the tools to set evidence-based emissions reduction targets and embody meaningful commitment to #climateaction. One-third of global energy emissions are driven by the buildings sector and 80% of the buildings that will exist in 2050 already exist today. That means #decarbonising the existing stock of physical assets is a climate priority! #SBTF mobilises #faiths4climate to create an emissions inventory and set science-based reduction targets #faithclimateaction #emissiontargets #actonclimate. 🚨In case you missed it. On Friday, the Science Based Targets initiative published a ‘clarification’ to their seismic announcement on Tuesday that they would allow an increased role for carbon credits in achieving emission reductions targets The SBTi clarified that there had been ‘no change’ to their standards, and that any change would have to go through their usual approval process So in other words: ‘nothing to see here!’ But it really begs the question, why publish the statement at all? 🎪 It’s such a circus and poor governance from a body that we all need to succeed! Good coverage in Bloomberg from Ben Elgin exploring how lobbyists from the carbon credit industry have been allegedly pressurizing SBTi representatives to make this change https://lnkd.in/emv3E9KA

E3G, the independent climate-change think tank, celebrated twenty years of climate politics during London Climate Action Week (LCAW). Now in its sixth year, LCAW celebrated #BeatTheHeat between 22nd - 30th June this year. Launched by E3G and the Mayor of London in 2019, LCAW has established itself as one of the most significant events in the global climate calendar, with over 300 events and over 50,000 attendees from around the world. Whatever the current political weather, LCAW stands as a platform for advancing concrete climate action this year. It aims to kick start the cooperation, politics, and diplomacy needed to deliver ambitious and deliverable climate targets in 2025, which countries are now all preparing for the UN. The inaugural State of Climate Politics Forum, held on Tuesday, June 25th, hosted a range of international high-level speakers who examined the politics and geopolitics of delivering ambition in 2025 and how to sustain it through the next turbulent decade. This conference was one element of E3G’s investment programme to help remedy the ‘climate politics gap’ by building a stronger practitioner community and more robust debate around climate politics.
