In this latest article in our ongoing series on the #HydrogenEconomy, we take a deep dive into the 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗴𝗴 𝗗𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗺𝗮 that hinders the scaling of green hydrogen production and consumption due to nascent demand and a lack of large-scale production 🐣🌍 🔍 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗺𝗮: Green hydrogen tackles pivotal energy challenges such as carbon emissions reduction and energy security. However, it faces a classical chicken-and-egg dilemma, as a demand shortage hampers production growth and vice versa. The challenge lies in the interplay of demand and supply dynamics, where the absence of infrastructure and clear regulatory frameworks discourages potential consumers and investors alike. 🚀 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲: ▪ Consumers are wary of hydrogen adoption due to uncertain availability, affordability, and reliability. ▪ Industries must make considerable investments in the energy transition to hydrogen and remain cost-competitive. ▪ Infrastructure constraints and the lack of policy frameworks impede the sustainable adoption of hydrogen. 🔑 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁'𝘀 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗴𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗺𝗮: ▪ Financial incentives, such as hydrogen infrastructure bonds, spur private investment. ▪ Public-private partnerships drive infrastructure development and innovation. ▪ Supportive regulation, including incentives and carbon offset guidelines, stimulates demand. 🤝 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀: ▪ In the EU, hydrogen initiatives that arised from the European Green Deal promote green hydrogen adoption. ▪ In the US, legislative measures like the Inflation Reduction Act provide a shift toward sustainable hydrogen. 📈 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: Addressing the 'chicken and egg' dilemma is pivotal for green hydrogen to contribute effectively to the global energy transition. It requires a concerted effort from governments, industries, and stakeholders to navigate the complexities of the hydrogen economy, ensuring a sustainable and climate-neutral energy future. I am looking forward to the #WorldHydrogen2024 in Rotterdam - an event that will not only set new standards but also emphasise once again that the hydrogen ramp-up has already begun and that green hydrogen and derivatives will be a "key ingredient" of future defossilised energy systems. Nevertheless, there is still a significant gap between the big announced H2 projects and those that have FID. The reasons for this are clear: first movers currently still bear a large (financial) risk. This can be minimised by (I) Targeted incentives (II) Clear and transparent regulations (not over-regulation) and (III) Forward-looking energy partnerships. In this context, I am also looking forward to a presentation that I will be giving together with Marius Holst at the H2 Tech Innovation Stage next Tuesday, 14 May at 3:30 p.m. The topic: "International Power-to-X Hubs - Insights into Global Production and Supply Costs of Green Hydrogen and Derivatives". We look forward to meeting you there!

“Rome was not built in a day, and neither will a world-leading climate neutral European economy. But together, step by step, we are building it.” Opening today’s Renewable Hydrogen Summit in Brussels, Ursula von der Leyen reaffirmed the European Commission commitment to advancing renewable hydrogen. In her address, she highlighted Europe’s ambitious targets, which, once embedded in national laws across Member States, will drive demand throughout the value chain and support the scale-up of renewable hydrogen production across the continent. Acknowledging the challenges ahead, President von der Leyen called for swift progress on clean lead markets and streamlined funding via the European Hydrogen Bank. She also emphasized the Commission’s commitment to supporting European-made technology, saying, “They are the very innovators that pioneered renewable hydrogen tech in the first place, and this secures Europe’s energy independence and creates good jobs here, in Europe”. One thing is clear – more needs to be done to ensure that EU ambitious targets become a reality. Stay tuned as our summit sessions begin! What is the pathway to a clean #hydrogen economy in Europe? At the Innovate to Net Zero Summit at World Hydrogen Week in Copenhagen, CATF's Alex Carr highlighted the challenging economics around hydrogen targets, and stressed that more policy effort is needed to couple the clean hydrogen production push with necessary offtake in sectors that need clean hydrogen the most. On a separate panel, Alex discussed the industrial "trilemma" facing Europe – keeping industry local and costs low while decarbonising. Policymakers must tackle the issue of raising the sufficient capital needed to decarbonise industry to keep it active and competitive on the continent. https://lnkd.in/e2gmqN4U
