So what are ecosystem services? Check out this infographic that shows the 4 main categories of ecosystem services! 🌎 🌳 Ecosystem services are the essential benefits humans gain from natural ecosystems, such as clean air, water, and food. Recognizing their importance, Canada has implemented initiatives to protect and enhance these services. Programs like the Canada Nature Fund support conservation efforts, while Green Infrastructure Programs invest in projects like wetland restoration and urban green spaces for flood control and climate regulation. At the provincial and municipal levels, initiatives like Ontario’s Greenbelt and Toronto’s Ravine Strategy further demonstrate Canada's commitment to preserving its natural environment. These efforts are crucial for sustainable development and environmental conservation. I designed this image to illustrate a Blue-Green Infrastructure (BGI) concept for rural and urban areas. This approach integrates sustainable water management solutions, using green infrastructure to naturally manage stormwater, reduce flooding, improve water quality, and create vibrant ecological and recreational spaces. The goal is to show how thoughtfully designed landscapes can harmonize water systems with green spaces, building a resilient, sustainable environment. With extreme weather events and flooding becoming all too common—such as those currently affecting Spain and Colombia—solutions like BGI must become the cornerstone of urban and rural planning. While we can't stop climate change, we can adapt to it and safeguard our communities. Let's shift towards sustainable strategies that help us not only survive but thrive in a changing world. #NBS #ClimateChange #Adaptability #Resilience #developingcountries #research #DeakinUniversity

The first climate budget of Rio’s city administration, currently under discussion in the City Council, proposes that out of the R$ 39 billion in fixed expenses set for next year, R$ 3.7 billion will be allocated to actions related to climate change. This topic will also be discussed at the Urban Summit 20 event, which will bring together cities from around the world from November 14 to 17, as part of the G20’s parallel agenda. “This measure will help raise public awareness of the climate crisis by providing transparency to these figures. Allocating part of the budget to mitigate climate change is the largest investment, with social returns, that a city can make,” says environmentalist and president of the Jardim Botânico Institute, Sérgio Besserman. Of the R$ 3.7 billion, around R$ 1.1 billion is earmarked for improvements in sanitation and proper waste disposal. The remaining funds will be used for services like slope stabilization, community sanitation, the creation and maintenance of urban parks, among other projects.

Today we launched #KepKatitjin - Gabi Kaadadjan, the third #WaterwiseActionPlan, aiming to transform Perth and Peel into leading #waterwise communities by 2030! 🏆 Under the award-winning Waterwise Program, Western Australians have already saved 24 billion litres of water! The new plan continues this momentum with 8 new initiatives and 35 ongoing actions, focusing on water conservation, urban greening, and climate resilience. 🌳 The program has not only reduced water usage but also contributed to the planting of more than 10,000 trees and nearly 300,000 waterwise plants since 2019. 🏞️ The new plan extends beyond Perth and Peel, looking to expand water-saving initiatives into regional communities. Together, we’re building a more water-secure and climate-resilient future for #WesternAustralia. 💧🌏 Learn more: https://ow.ly/n13I50TO87B #ClimateResilience #WaterConservation #WAWater #UrbanGreening #NationalWaterWeek #WesternAustralia #WaterManagement #BetterTogether #sustainability

🌊 Protecting Calgary's Headwaters for a Sustainable Future 🌲 The Calgary Climate Hub (CCH) is proud to support the Calgary Headwaters Protection & Restoration (CHPR) Campaign to advocate for stronger ecological protections in the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan (SSRP). Our goal: By August 2025, ensure that the renewed SSRP includes clear, actionable targets for preserving the headwaters regions crucial to Calgary’s water security, ecological resilience, and climate strategy alignment. Campaign Goals: 1. Incorporate language in the SSRP that emphasizes ecological integrity and prioritizes cumulative impact assessment for East Kananaskis and Ghost planning sub-regions. 2. Urge the City of Calgary to submit a formal response aligning with its climate strategy, specifically highlighting headwaters protection for enhanced climate resilience. Why This Matters: The SSRP guides land use on Crown land in Alberta’s eastern slopes, yet current practices have resulted in notable ecological and climate impacts in these landscapes. This 2025 renewal offers a unique opportunity to champion land management practices that prioritize long-term resilience, biodiversity, and water security for the Calgary region. Partnership Opportunities: We’re building on the momentum of the 2024 Kananaskis Logging Slowdown campaign and collaborating with committed organizations, including Save Our Slopes, Bow River Bioregional Regeneration Network, Take a Stand for Kananaskis (TASK), and CPAWS Southern Alberta. Together, we’re committed to a future where Calgary’s headwaters and ecosystems are safeguarded for generations to come. Join us in advocating for these critical amendments to the SSRP and supporting sustainable land-use practices in Calgary's headwaters regions. #CalgaryClimateHub #HeadwatersProtection #SSRP #EcologicalIntegrity #ClimateResilience #EastKananaskis #GhostRegion #Calgary

Our latest article highlights the urgent need for action on #PeatlandRestoration. 🌧️ The UK is, as we all know, a wet country. It’s home to diverse peatland habitats like bogs, fens, marshes, and swamps, which are vital for carbon storage. Unfortunately, only 13% of our peatlands remain in a near-natural state, and many contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. 🌍 If we fail to restore these ecosystems, reaching net zero becomes unattainable. Fortunately, nature markets and carbon standards like the #PeatlandCode are paving the way for restoration financing through verified emissions reductions. 🤔 However, challenges remain, particularly around the classification of carbon credits, which can limit demand for peatland restoration. While tree planting takes years for emissions removal, peatland restoration can deliver immediate benefits. Urgent action is needed. Read the article in full here: https://lnkd.in/eR-GFhEY Thanks once again to our natural capital manager Matthew Hay for another thought-provoking piece.

Eloquently and articulately put, as always from Matt. As someone who grew up on the edge of the Fens, I've seen this firsthand. Most people wouldn't even be able to tell you what a "Fen" is, yet these expanses of lowland peat are some of the UK's most productive agricultural land. They also hold the key to tackling climate change. In terms of areas of national importance, peatlands should be right up there at the top of the list! #fens #fenlands #peatlands #peatlandrestoration
