Every year, the world emits a staggering 50 gigatonnes of greenhouse gases. Of this, how much carbon can nature-based solutions realistically remove? Of late, Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology has been hailed as a cutting-edge solution for removing atmospheric carbon. But is it the most feasible way ahead? Challenges such as high energy demand and the need for large-scale infrastructure limit its scalability as of today. On the other hand, we have another powerful option: nature-based solutions. As the Earth’s natural DAC system, they excel at sequestering carbon while protecting biodiversity and supporting ecosystems essential for life. Together, nature-based solutions have the capacity to remove or avoid 4.5–5.75Gt annually by 2030 and 10–12Gt every year by 2050. But to unlock this potential, we must plan ahead and act now. A combination of data-driven technology, rigorous planning, and on-ground monitoring are crucial for identifying the right lands and maximising their environmental impact. Explore our article to find out how we can fully unlock the carbon removal potential of nature-based solutions. At Ankur Scientific, we're harnessing the power of biochar to tackle climate change head-on. 🌍 Biochar, a fine-grained, highly porous material, is produced from biomass like agricultural byproducts, forestry residues, and even solid waste. Through high-heat, low-oxygen processes such as pyrolysis or gasification, we create this incredible material that is not only sustainable but also one of the most cost-effective solutions for permanent climate change mitigation. By integrating biochar into our operations, Ankur Scientific is committed to leading the charge in sustainable innovation and driving impactful environmental change. #AnkurScientific #Biochar #ClimateChange #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #CleanEnergy #GreenTech #CarbonSequestration

🌟 **Great News!** 🌟🌾☘️ I'm excited to share that our recent research poster, which was presented at the 2024 UK Farm Woodland Forum, hosted by the School of Management at Cranfield University, is published. The poster explores the potential of silvopastoral systems for climate change mitigation and examines future policy scenarios. Using experimental tree biomass carbon data, I modeled and extrapolated the findings across Northern Ireland to assess possible pathways for meeting the NI 2040 emissions reduction targets in Land Use, Land-Use Change, Forestry, (LULUCF) and Agriculture (AFOLU). We are committed to contributing via cutting edge research to influence better and safer policy choices for both the planet and its people. Our work aims to support sustainable practices that balance environmental needs with societal well-being, ensuring a greener future for all. The Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming Certification Framework (#CRCF) has been formally approved by the Council of the European Union and came into force on Monday, December 9th 2024, as published in the Official Journal of the European Union. ⬇️In case you missed it, read Bellona's take on the latest developments in the associated methodologies discussed at the Carbon Removals Expert Group in October! These methodologies have not yet been adopted nor finalised, as they are planned to be approved as a delegated act in the first half of 2025.
The European Commission hosted the 5th Carbon Removals Expert Group meeting in October 2024, bringing key discussions on the proposed methodologies under the upcoming Carbon Removal Certification Framework, which was approved in Council last week! Bellona’s takeaways: 🔸The methodologies are more advanced for DACCS and BioCCS, with the caveat of biomass sustainability used and its whole life cycle emissions. 🔸 Biochar monitoring and liability requirements are inconsistent with other methodologies. 🔸 Carbon farming methodologies (agriculture, forestry and peatlands) were presented as draft elements with crucial pieces still missing. Many key details need further deliberation such as baselines, inconsistencies in sustainability requirements and discrepancies between activity and monitoring periods. 🔸 Bellona sees the net-zero and climate neutrality claims, using the suggested quantification methods, for carbon storage in buildings as problematic. 🔸 Currently, no end-use of the potential certificates derived from those approaches was suggested. This is essential information to design methodologies that are fit for purpose. 📃🔗Read the article & dive into Bellona's detailed consultation response here: https://lnkd.in/dhXxE9eV #CRCF #EUremovals #removals #netzero #carbonremovals #climateaction

**Unlocking Carbon-Negative Power Stations in New Zealand** Recent research from the University of Canterbury and Ngawhā Generation Ltd reveals a promising pathway for New Zealand to achieve carbon-negative power generation. By retrofitting the Ngāwhā power station, which is already carbon neutral, the facility could capture additional carbon dioxide from forestry residues, effectively enhancing its sustainability profile. The study highlights the potential for three income streams from the modified power station: geothermal electricity, carbon capture and sequestration, and the production of high-purity food-grade carbon dioxide, with the latter identified as the most lucrative. This innovative approach not only addresses the growing need to manage forestry waste but also positions New Zealand as a potential leader in CO2 removal technologies. As the global demand for sustainable energy solutions increases, New Zealand's robust natural resources and regulatory framework provide a unique opportunity to develop multiple value chains. By integrating geothermal energy, forestry management, and carbon capture, the country can pave the way for achieving climate targets while fostering international collaborations. #Sustainability #Geothermal #ClimateSolutions #Innovation #circularEconomy #climatechange #renewable #NewZealand
