Despite efforts to support freelancers in various industries, there is little focus on those in creative sectors like theatre, where unique financial vulnerabilities and job insecurity are common. There needs to be a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by theatre freelancers which is essential for meaningful policy changes. Calling all freelance filmmakers...! Do you get paid to travel? I'm not talking mileage or hotel costs, but actually reimbursed for your time. Say you need to drive from Bristol to London, stay overnight, shoot the next day, and then drive back. 🚘 Do you charge for the day you spent driving there? 🌙 Do you charge for the night away from your friends/family/social life? We pay our crew for both of these, and subsequently charge clients. But is that making us less competitive? We genuinely don't know - we rarely get sight of other production company's rates or how and what they charge for. We're not going to stop paying our crew - we've been there, done that, and know what it's like. But we might be able to consider other ways to be competitive and fair. #videoproduction #video #crew

What should have been a simple task turned into a maze of fake skills and wasted time. Many profiles boasted skills that the individuals couldn't even demonstrate when put to the test. The consequence? Deserving freelancers missed out on opportunities, while my friend ended up hiring a full-time employee at a lower cost than a freelancer. Let's be responsible with our profiles. Only list skills you genuinely possess and can confidently deliver. Your integrity matters, and it ensures deserving talents get the recognition and opportunities they deserve. To the many many freelancers and people looking for work who get in touch with me on a daily basis, I'm really sorry that I'm often not able to respond to you. Especially VoiceOver artists. SO MANY VoiceOver artists. The sheer volume of these enquiries means that I'm just not able to take the time it would need to respond to them all, and I know the same is true for many other people who run similar businesses to mine. Especially VoiceOver artists. SO MANY VoiceOver artists. And I really sympathise with how frustrating it must be to send out email after email and message after message and get no response. It's tough out there for freelancers and people trying to break into the industry, but there are amazing opportunities out there. So what's my advice? Well there's no silver bullet and really the key factor is timing. If your email happens to land in my inbox at a time when I'm looking for someone then that could make all the difference. So keep plugging away. My only other piece of advice is that show is more powerful than tell. I'm always looking for evidence of what you're capable of so when you're contacting people the easier you can make it for them to see your work the better. So keep going, keep making good stuff, keep getting better and talent will out (with a little dash of luck).
