The value of these qualifications to social mobility is incalculable. They highlight the need to ensure that education offers routes for those that learn in a variety of different ways. Surely the best best forward would be to make improvements to the existing BTEC assessment strategies, for example not capping students’ achievement to the lowest assessment grade for a particular unit, or by reviewing the size, language or coverage of each assessment? Promoting ambition and growing confidence in the learner, while reviewing the marking load of the teachers could reform the BTEC.

An interesting read: According to the latest data from the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER), 90.5% of all student enrolments in skills training—equating to 4,575,770 enrolments—are with independent Registered Training Organisations (RTOs). Yet, despite this overwhelming participation, the Australian, state, and territory governments continue to position TAFE as the cornerstone of the skills training system while progressively reducing funding for private RTOs. Does education in our country needs reformation ? Well while most of us may agree to it, Sir Ken Robinson has an interesting and insightful thought on it . The fact is that given the challenges we face, education doesn't need to be reformed -- it needs to be transformed. The key to this transformation is not to standardize education, but to personalize it, to build achievement on discovering the individual talents of each child, to put students in an environment where they want to learn and where they can naturally discover their true passions. An interesting Webinar by Chartered College of Teaching and COBIS - Council of British International Schools. Good to hear how other international schools approach professional development, the perceptions of international teachers in the UK and what the UK could learn from international teaching professionals. I specifically thought the comments around the level of CPD available and networking open to international schools and teachers was so true. The perception that international teachers are behind the UK is thankfully changing. It was also very thought provoking to reflect on the onboarding and induction processes international schools offer and how UK schools could benefit from adopting some of these approaches. Independent Training Providers deliver more than 30,000 16 to 19 Study Programme places each year, worth nearly £200m per annum and somehow this provision still remains one of the sector's best-kept secrets. Great to visit Juniper Training Ltd in Leicester today to see first-hand the positive impact on the lives and prospects of young people. Saw some particularly amazing ESOL provision being delivered by inspirational and passionate tutors and trainers. Another reminder though that "FE pay issues" does not just mean colleges, but all providers who struggle to attract and retain delivery staff, especially those delivering vital maths and English provision. Whilst I was only there for a relatively short period there was a steady stream of young people interested in enrolling. Giving learners greater choice should be a key principle of our 16 to 19 system. In AELP's proposals for the Autumn Budget 2024, we called on the government to enable young people to be able to choose their preferred place of study and not be artificially restricted by allocations and arbitrary growth limits faced by providers. Skills training can't fully replace higher education due to key differences: 1. Comprehensive Learning: Higher education provides a broader understanding of subjects, fostering critical thinking across various fields. Skills training focuses on specific tasks, lacking this depth. 2. Credential Value: Degrees carry more weight in fields like medicine, law, or engineering, where credentials are often mandatory. 3. Career Adaptability: Higher education promotes a mindset suited for evolving career paths, while skills training may not provide the same flexibility. 4. Networking Opportunities: Colleges connect students with networks, internships, and alumni, offering career advantages that skills programs may lack. Overall, skills training meets immediate job needs, but higher education supports long-term career growth and personal development.
Short-term vocational training has its purpose. But we shouldn't use it as an excuse not to fix higher education.
