We were thrilled to receive a Business and Partner Award from Cardiff and Vale College last night. 👏 The enduring relationship between FOR Cardiff and CAVC now spans almost a decade. During that time, CAVC has become a trusted training partner with FOR Cardiff, delivering a range of training courses for employees of our member businesses. In recent years, we became sponsors of CAVC’s Catering & Hospitality Skills Academy. The academy enables individuals from challenged socio-economic backgrounds to gain valuable skills and improve their chance of employability.

Why are Hospitality TAFE students in class on Fridays when they should be out gaining real-world experience? TAFEs could open their doors from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, offering complimentary 60-minute sessions for industry owners, managers, and middle managers. These sessions would focus on operational skills and financial management, directly applicable to their venues without the formalities of meeting accredited course constraints. This initiative is a SUNK cost for TAFE. Moreover, on Mondays, Diploma students could serve as a dynamic, no-cost upskilling force, bringing fresh insights and practical training to venues where they can spend a day. It's an opportunity to offer practical assistance to venues at no cost with a completely under-utilised group, heading towards becoming tomorrow's industry leaders. I raise a point. While formal education is valuable, nothing can replace the wisdom and practical knowledge gained through years of real-world experience. Incorporating more mature and semi-retired individuals into hospitality training programs can provide invaluable mentorship and guidance to young professionals entering the industry. Their insights can help bridge the gap between theory and practice, ensuring that future generations are well-equipped to succeed in the dynamic world of hospitality.

Good financial advice academies focus on developing practical skills including soft and communication skills! Kudos to M&G Wealth who seem to be really focused on the practical development of trainee financial advisors. I’m loving hearing about the amazing work that Kenny O'Donnell FPFS, CII Certs (MP ER), MCSI, IMC, BAcc and M&G Wealth are doing Matthew Ings. Successful academies do far more than just focus on exam passes. 👍😊 The best of best focus on the practical application of the knowledge and building up trainee advisor confidence. 👍 Role plays ✅ Mentoring and coaching ✅ Goal driven financial planning ✅ Holistic financial planning ✅ I’ve said it before - passing our driving tests and becoming competent safe drivers are too different things. 🚘 You can be a diploma qualified advisor on paper but are you competent applying your knowledge in real client scenarios? 🤔 When doing your due diligence on financial advice academies please look under the bonnet to ensure that there is a very strong focus on the soft skills. 🙏These soft skills should be taught by a team of people who have been there, done it and worn the t shirt. 👕 👚 Learn from the best! 🤩 Exams are important but exam passes just provide the foundation! You must learn how to apply your knowledge for the benefit of clients in a safe environment! 📚 🤔 Build your confidence and skills to apply your new found knowledge. 👍😊 Great to see M&G! 🚀 #financialadvice #academy #traineefinancialplanner #roleplays #coaching #mentorship #practicalapplication

People are an organisation's greatest asset. Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending the Princess Royal Training Awards ceremony as a Board Trustee of City & Guilds. The awards, launched in 2016 under the patronage of HRH The Princess Royal, celebrate organisations that demonstrate excellence in learning and development. As a passionate advocate for lifelong learning, I was truly inspired seeing this year's recipients—from global enterprises to innovative SMEs. One thing stands out clearly: investing in people drives organisational success. As Peter Drucker wisely noted, learning is "a lifelong process of keeping abreast of change. And the most pressing task is to teach people how to learn." Congratulations to all 53 organisations recognised this year. Each has shown exceptional commitment to developing their people through innovative training programmes that deliver measurable impact. Their achievements remind us that in our rapidly evolving world, organisations that prioritise continuous learning and skills development aren't just investing in their workforce—they're investing in their future. A recent Harvard Business Review article (https://lnkd.in/eh6BVwBV) reinforces this, highlighting how crucial it is for organisations to focus on developing the right skills for their people's future success. Particular thanks to Dame Ann Limb DBE DL, Chair, and Kirstie Donnelly, MBE, CEO of City & Guilds, for their leadership in championing workplace learning and development across the UK. #SkillsForLife #LifelongLearning #ProfessionalDevelopment #PRTA2024 #CityAndGuilds

The hospitality sector contributes £93 billion annually to the UK economy. Despite having access to one of the largest pools of levy funding, utilising all available funds before deadlines poses a notable challenge for businesses within the hospitality sector. Given the substantial underspend within the national adult education budget—nearly £300 million over the past four years—levy-sharing schemes could provide a crucial solution for the UK hospitality sector. Recognising the escalating demand for education and Continuous Professional Development (CPD), and understanding the profound impact that this has on enhancing industry retention rates, there is a pressing need to enhance the training of individuals in effective management practices. By doing so, we aim to reduce employee turnover and ensure our industry has individuals with a high level of upskilling to ensure sustainable growth. Hence, the introduction of the Levy Transfer scheme. This initiative aims to consolidate untapped levy funds and redistribute them to Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME’s) that lack access to the advantages of The Burnt Chef Project apprenticeship program. For more info check out our brochure below. Thanks to Performance Learning Group for their support with this. Andrea Dodd Mica Maurtua
