Shall we reclaim the word "overhead"? Maybe treat it like it isn't a four-letter word? Successful nonprofits can only do their magic because of people working behind the scenes in administrative roles. They make sure that all the logistical details get covered so that the lights come on, to keep the organization in legal compliance, to have effective public communications, and so front line staff can depend on a steady paycheck. How much good could nonprofits do in the world without overhead? #nonprofit #OverheadMyth #OverheadLie

This is a great perspective. I have noticed a trend in the marketing industry of promoting sales at the expense of overhead roles (i.e. operations, project managers, Analytics and Data managers, etc.). It is short-term thinking that drives quick bursts of revenue, but it ultimately weakens the foundation of long-term success. We live in an age of big-data. When I was working in the pro sports world, there was a huge pivot into capturing data to create tactical advantages. All of those roles were overhead. Individuals created the systems and processes to capture data and then build teams that are tasked with analyzing it. It is no longer an advantage to have these internal teams. It is imperative to have one just to reach the baseline level of relevance. Marketing is no different. We are no longer dealing with simple task management; global agencies have proprietary systems that track every step of a project's life cycle-from invoicing to completion. This is all converted to data. Data is analyzed to identify inefficiencies and converted to strategies to identify opportunities for growth. While these overhead roles might not directly tie to immediate revenue like sales or production, they build the infrastructure for future success. Strategic thinkers understand that the data analyzed today will drive revenue tomorrow. Building strong operations and analytics teams is an investment that yields long-term returns, even if it doesn’t show up in the next quarterly earnings report. In a world where data is king, neglecting these roles in favor of short-term gains is a mistake. Investing in marketing overhead creates a strong foundation for growth and scalability, ensuring sustained success for years to come.

I loved the post below from the Charity Defense Council! Some funders will not support overhead. They only want their dollars to directly benefit the individuals being served, rather than supporting the indirect costs. While it's true that there may be times when indirect costs are a poor investment, this is often not the case. Let's say you are funding medical relief. What good is paying for the medicine if there isn't someone handling the logistics to ensure it gets to where it can do the most good? And how will that medicine be of benefit if there aren't staff making those in need aware that the medicine is available? Can medicine prescribe itself? Can a vaccine inject itself? Can a drug provide medication counseling on its own? Often times it is the staff in the background who make the most difference between a successful or unsuccessful program. By refusing to fund "overhead", those who actually are delivering services, driving participation, or playing other key roles in the success of the mission, you may actually be setting up nonprofits for failure. Rather than having blanket policies that exclude all overhead, or labeling a nonprofit as "underperforming" because of overhead, I'd suggest that we all take the time to investigate the impact that such expenses actually make toward the ends they hope to achieve! And while I'm at it, funding for fundraising can be pretty transformational to a cause as well! #IAMOVERHEAD

I just saw a local #fundraising position that requires the candidate to do all primary fundraising, accounting and human resources tasks. With a requirement of 45 - 60 hours per week! 🤯 As my friend Michelle Flores Vryn, CFRE put it last week - rolling 2 or 3 positions into one is a FAST TRACK to burn out!! 💥 It begs the question - why are #nonprofits so prone to stretching their resources beyond their means? Call me crazy, but I believe we have to be realistic about what is achievable with the budgets and resources allotted to us. Here's what's not realistic: ⏰ Expecting staff to put work over their personal lives 🤦♀️ Putting the workload of an entire team on ONE person 💰 Only correlating a fundraiser's value to their dollars raised When nonprofits are driving their mission on the backs of burnt out staff members, I'd argue we're doing more harm than good. Thoughts?

📣 Cohabiting couples across the UK are at risk of being left unprotected without a Will. With the concept of "common law marriage" no longer existing, many couples assume they’re covered, but the reality is quite different. By participating in Will Aid, your firm can help bridge this knowledge gap and ensure that more couples understand the importance of having a professionally written Will. 32% of cohabitees mistakenly believe their estate would automatically pass to their partner—you can play a key role in correcting this misconception and providing them with peace of mind. Join hundreds of solicitors this November in volunteering your time to write basic Wills for clients, all while supporting seven vital UK charities. It’s a chance to make a meaningful impact, grow your client base, and raise awareness of crucial legal protections. 👉 Find out how your firm can get involved at https://lnkd.in/eQq9RSCn #WillAid #WillAid2024 #willwriting #legacyprotection #privateclient #solicitors

We stand with Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) and over 200 other charities to ask our political leaders: where is your urgent plan to tackle hardship? 8 million households struggle to afford communication services. 8.5 million people lack basic digital skills. They're cut off from accessing affordable deals, getting advice and support, finding employment and connecting with loved ones. It's time to guarantee #OurEssentials by tackling the barriers to opportunity.

Will you support Settle's 1 in 3 Challenge this winter? In the UK, 1 in 3 care-leavers face homelessness within two years of transitioning out of the care system.
