Did you know that up to 1 in 4 UK adults are d/Deaf, and this number rises to 80% of those over 70? Yet many healthcare professionals receive no formal training on how to effectively communicate with d/Deaf individuals. In this powerful TEDx talk, pioneering palliative care physician Dr Natasha Wilcock, who is Deaf, illuminates the distinct needs of d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing patients, and underscores the invaluable contributions d/Deaf professionals bring to the healthcare landscape. Dr Wilcock - who is a member of the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme alongside our CEO Rachael Grimaldi - shines a spotlight on an often overlooked aspect of patient care, inspiring a more inclusive and compassionate approach to medical practice. Dr Wilcock reveals how many healthcare staff feel “underprepared & under skilled” at communicating with d/Deaf patients, and how training - such as that provided by her own organisation IDA Training - can help. CardMedic can also assist, with clinical content in multiple formats including British Sign Language. Everyone deserves equitable and compassionate care, and accessible communication is central to this. We celebrate Dr Wilcock's vital work to foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for d/Deaf patients and healthcare professionals. 👏 https://lnkd.in/eVm9Rtdd #InclusiveHealthcare #DeafAwareness #BSL

This is excellent news to break down the health inequalities for deaf people in communities. Often, not all face to face interpreters are readily available for emergency jobs given the time frame to find an interpreter. Having remote interpreter readily available when a call come in could help to save lives of many deaf people in emergency situations. All regional ambulance services across England should follow this example. #SaveLives #AcessToHealth #Equalities #BreakDownTheCommunicationBarriers

Shocking evidence from Mencap's Jackie O'Sullivan on the experience of people with a learning disability during covid - including refusal to treat and denial of resuscitation. Sadly, this is a shock not a surprise. People with a learning disability have always faced, and continue to face, deep-seated and damaging discrimination when trying to access medical care, which accounts for why so many die younger than the general population. During the first wave of the pandemic people with a learning disability were up to four times more likely to die from Covid. There are solutions to this - reversing the decline in numbers of specialist Learning Disability Nurses over the last 15 years, including everyone with a learning disability on GP Learning Disability Registers, annual health checks for people with a learning disability and so on. Looking forward to working constructively with the Government to embed these, and many other solutions, in the NHS Long Term Plan. https://lnkd.in/eFqUVfrk

Its #worldkidneyday. An opportunity to focus #community and action around #kidneyhealth, which is not experienced in the same way by all. In the UK, a report published by Kidney Research UK highlighted the reality that: 1. Living in deprivation=higher risk of needing care for #kidneydisease, as well as experiencing worse outcomes. 2. The burden of kidney disease is higher in people from minority ethnic communities, often because of related health conditions, high deprivation, and factors that make access to prevention and intervention more challenging. Picking up on the last point, our own research has shown that: 3. Minority ethnic patients wait 6-12 months longer for a donor organ which can have several benefits over other types of kidney replacement therapy. 4. Though access to #psychologicalsupport in renal services is patchy, the picture is worse for patients from communities traditionally underrepresented in kidney research more generally. 5. Knowledge of kidney disease and capacity to bare financial implications of therapy are major issues in low and middle income country settings. Differences within and between countries matter to reduce worldwide burden. So, this World Kidney Day, where there is commitment to a theme close to my heart- that everyone should have the tools to try and prevent kidney disease or reduce its impact, a humble effort to spread the word that kidneys are magic! Recognising #digitalaccessibility and exclusion, please share with your loved ones and wider #socialnetworks who may not see it otherwise!
