Tomorrow is the day we release our report on supporting family caregivers in STEMM! As universal as caregiving is, family caregivers continue to be undersupported. The report provides crucial recommendations to improve the STEMM environment for family caregivers. If you are interested in tuning in, you can register using the link below.
Despite the importance of caregiving, family caregivers remain under-supported in STEMM fields. Think you can avoid being a caregiver in the future? Think again. The video in the post below illuminates perfectly why I do what I do, which is advocacy for patients and caregivers. I was a caregiver for my father after a stroke. That shit is hard as hell. And that's with a supportive spouse, mother, and brother. The challenges of the child in the video? Unimaginably greater. And that's the reality for many, if not most, caregivers in the US. Why do I include advocacy for patients? A few reasons: - Caregivers play a front-and-center role for those for whom they're providing care. Medication management. Transport to and from medical appointments. Etc., etc., etc. To be a successful caregiver, you have to think like a patient. - I'm a patient myself. I became a temporary caregiver for my mother while recovering from my first open-heart surgery. I was a caregiver for my father after I'd already had my second heart surgery. - Many caregivers also have chronic illness, partly because many caregivers are themselves aging. Caregiver presents no less than a double burden. - Caregivers have higher morbidity and higher mortality compared to non-caregivers of the same age. (Interesting further point: dementia caregivers have higher morbidity and mortality compared to other caregivers.) Caregivers struggle with relationships, finances, work productivity, and their own health. Don't wait to prepare for your caregiving future. It's coming, if it's not here already. Does your organization need help supporting your employees who are caregivers at home? I do speaking and consulting on this. Note: many employees don't talk about these issues, often out of embarrassment.

Did you know 5.4 million children in America are caregivers? Not a dry eye for anyone watching this. 💔 Try to watch this recent TODAY Show segment and not be moved to tears. Here's why it matters: * Millions of young people balance school, activities, and caring for loved ones with health challenges * They cook, give medication, and provide comfort - often unseen and unrecognized * In places like Florida, 1 in 4 middle schoolers bears this burden 🤯 Organizations like American Association of Caregiving Youth (AACY) and Kesem are leading critical advocacy and support. At CareYaya, we're inspired by these young heroes. They remind us why our mission to revolutionize caregiving is so vital. Our AI-powered care platform is mobilizing thousands of healthcare college students across the country. To provide affordable care relief to families. Creating a win-win solution that: 1. Provides support for people needing care 2. Gives healthcare students meaningful experience for future clinical careers 3. Frees up family members who need a much-needed break from caregiving www.careyaya.org BUT, there's so much more to be done! We need: * School programs that recognize and support young caregivers * Tech solutions that make caregiving more manageable for all ages * A societal shift in how we view and value care work ❤️ How can we, as a society, better support young caregivers? Together, we can create a future where no child bears this burden alone. 💪

I'm getting started processing the literature we are coming across in our SPOR EA Scoping Review. Our focus for this study is to find out what is available in the research literature to understand cost accounting methodologies for families who are operating the equivalent of long term care beds in their homes, and how these costs compare to similar operations in long term care facilities. For my purposes, I have landed on using the term 'care recipient' to refer the beneficiary of family caregiving home-based support. I want to use a term that is as inclusive as possible, as there are many different scenarios that result in a family taking on the extra-ordinary work of providing home-based caregiving beds. https://lnkd.in/gjWhHbUi

Today is #WorldBookDay!📚 During our search for books that highlight #homebasedchildcare, we found that most books about child care focus on child care centers and rarely highlight #familychildcare. However, we did find books that show the nurturing relationships between family, friend and neighbor (FFN) caregivers and the children in their care. #OnOurBlog we highlight books that celebrate the loving, responsive, and continuous care that family, friends and neighbor (FFN) caregivers provide.
