As Chief Lifeguard of Golden State Lifeguards, I take my role seriously. Being "old school" means I refuse to compromise on the skills, knowledge, and professionalism required to protect lives. Lifeguarding is not just a summer job—it’s a life-saving mission, and that requires the highest standards. When candidates come knocking on our door, they are screened thoroughly: ✔️ Skills assessments to test their abilities in real-world scenarios. ✔️ Comprehensive background checks for integrity and reliability. ✔️ Verification of certifications to ensure compliance with top-tier safety practices. Some may see my expectations as "too high." And yes, I acknowledge that our stringent process might deter a few—but why should we settle for less when lives are on the line? Lifeguards seeking first responder status need to rise to the challenge. There is no room for compromise in life-saving work. Our lifeguards are the frontline in emergencies, whether it's preventing drownings, performing rescues, or offering medical standby at events. Mediocrity has no place here. At Golden State Lifeguards, we believe in equipping our team to be the best. It’s time for the lifeguard profession to step up, to demand respect as first responders, and to embrace the responsibility that comes with it. Are you ready to meet the challenge? If so, we’re hiring—but come prepared to prove you’ve got what it takes. Because lives depend on it. #GoldenStateLifeguards #LifeguardLife #FirstResponderStatus #NoCompromise #LifeguardStandards #SafetyFirst

Rethinking Lifeguard Certification Standards: The Age Factor As someone deeply invested in water safety, I believe it's time we address a critical issue affecting pool safety nationwide—the certification of lifeguards as young as 16 years old. While many 16-year-olds are eager and capable of learning lifesaving techniques, the reality is that maturity, responsibility, and advanced situational awareness are key components of effective surveillance and emergency response. Unfortunately, these traits often develop with age and experience, leaving many young lifeguards unprepared for the high-stakes scenarios they may face. Tragically, there have been incidents where inexperienced or immature lifeguards have been unable to prevent drownings on their watch. This isn't just devastating for the families involved—it's a heavy burden for the young lifeguard and a liability for pool operators. Pool safety demands vigilance, quick decision-making, and a strong sense of responsibility. While we can applaud the enthusiasm of younger lifeguards, we must also question whether current certification standards are truly aligned with the demands of the role. It may be time for the industry to reconsider the minimum age and required qualifications for pool lifeguards. Perhaps a more robust mentorship system or a graduated certification process could ensure that only those truly prepared are entrusted with swimmer safety. What are your thoughts? How can we strike a balance between providing opportunities for young lifeguards and ensuring swimmer safety at all times? #WaterSafety #LifeguardCertification #DrowningPrevention #PoolSafety #LifeguardTraining #PublicSafety #Aquatics #ResponsibleHiring #YouthDevelopment #SafetyFirst

Is there such a thing as irrelevant job experience and the answer is yes. Including past job roles that have no relation to the job you're applying for can confuse employers. If the experience is from a different field, focus on transferable skills rather than unrelated tasks. Example of Irrelevant Experience: "Worked as a lifeguard at a community pool, where I monitored swimmers and enforced pool rules." Unless the job directly applies to safety, management, or customer service, leave out unrelated roles. Instead, focus on relevant tasks like organization, communication, and leadership.
