As a global health practitioner (with graduation around the corner), I am excited to share that I successfully presented my capstone, the culminating project of my MPH program, to my colleagues at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. In collaboration with Primeros Pasos, a local NGO in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala that addresses child malnutrition within the Palajunoj Valley, my capstone is a multisite mixed-methods pilot study that is exploring dietary practices and food purchasing behaviors among fathers in the Western Highlands. By investigating barriers to paternal engagement in child malnutrition alleviation, my capstone aims to: 📝 Enhance programmatic interventions at Primeros Pasos 💡 Expand awareness of child malnutrition 🤝🏾 Increase paternal participation in health initiatives in rural Guatemala Delving into global health research and practice over the past two years has been enriching, challenging, and rewarding. With the support of the This Is Public Health Global Grant through the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH), my capstone truly encapsulates the knowledge and skills that I developed in community-engaged research, capacity building, program evaluation, and public health consulting. I am forever grateful for the support of my professors, mentors, and colleagues who have guided me along the way. As I continue to grow professionally, I am committed to advocating for indigenous-centered health practices and research, thus utilizing health equity as a vehicle for social justice. The School of Public Health is proud to have 27 faculty and students attending and delivering their presentations including both, oral and poster formats at the American Public Health Association (APHA) 2024 Annual Meeting & Expo. We are incredibly proud of our presenters and wish them the best as they represent The University of Memphis School of Public Health. Dr. Ashish Joshi, PhD,MBBS,MPH will be a panelist on the topic: 'Messaging and Explaining Public Health in a Climate of Misinformation and Disinformation.' In a rapidly changing socio-economic and geopolitical environment that demands a new way of thinking about public health within a local, national, and global context, public health education shouldn't just be about research and garnering knowledge. We need to translate those programs into impactful solutions versus just publishing papers and books and we need practical solutions in order to instill a greater community impact. Learn how the University of Memphis School of Public Health is redefining public health. We wish you much success today, Dr. Joshi! #publichealth #publichealthmatters #sphcares #UNAI

Connecting, Mentoring and Linking Public Health Practitioners, Partners and Community for Systems Change
Sharing this out with my governmental #publichealth colleagues across Iowa and the nation: Here is another opportunity to add to the collective understanding of how we spend our time in our public health work. The 2024 Governmental Public Health Job Task Survey is open until 7.31.24 and is an opportunity to provide confidential insights about the essential functions of the public health workforce. The national partners conducting this assessment intend to use the findings to support the creation of tools to improve education, recruitment, and retention of the workforce. The time commitment is estimated to be 10-30 minutes.
