In the context of International Migrants Day, JRS Europe Director Alberto Ares delivered a conference in Valencia titled "Debunking Migration Myths: Five Uncomfortable Truths." This event, organized by SJM Valencia, provided an important platform to address common misconceptions surrounding migration. Here are some important insights from the discussion: 1. Migration levels remain steady and are vital for economic growth. 2. Migrants contribute more to state economies than they receive in aid. 3. Contrary to common belief, migration does not increase crime rates; rather, regularization enhances security. 4. Migrants fill crucial roles that complement local labour markets, rather than displacing native workers. 5. Walls do not stop migration. Policies focused on inclusion and human dignity are the way forward. As Alberto Ares emphasized, "We must live as witnesses of hope, rooted in our values and passionate in our purpose." Let’s work together to foster understanding and shape policies that embrace diversity, justice, and shared prosperity. A World Connected: The Story of Migration One out of every thirty people in the world today is a migrant, which means that migrants represent a significant portion of the global population. This large number highlights the importance and influence of migration in our society. Migrants play a vital role in driving development in both the countries they come from and the countries they move to. They do this in many different ways. As workers, migrants help fill gaps in labor markets, contributing to various industries and strengthening economies. Some migrants come in search of educational opportunities, broadening their skills and knowledge. Others become entrepreneurs, starting new businesses that create jobs and stimulate local economies. Additionally, many migrants express their creativity and share their cultures as artists, enriching the social fabric of the places they settle in. In doing all of this and more, migrants contribute to the development and growth of their new communities while still supporting their home countries. This Wednesday, as we observe International Migrants Day, let's take a moment to recognize and celebrate the countless contributions of millions of migrants across the globe. It is a day to appreciate their hard work, resilience, and the positive impact they have in our world. By honoring their achievements, we can foster greater understanding and solidarity among all people, regardless of their background or where they come from. Together, we can acknowledge the vital role that migrants play in shaping a better future for everyone. Let's Celebrate Migrants Today! #InternationalMigrantsDay #migration

I've been a migrant for the past 13 years, in Asia (#Singapore) and now in Europe (#Norway). My experience in both countries differ quite a lot. I was first a student migrant and then a skilled professional migrant in Singapore. Being an #OverseasFilipinoWorker taught me a lot about how the #Philippines (as a source country) and Singapore (as a recipient country) treats its migrant workers. Singapore is very efficient in processing work pass or employment pass applications. However, your chances of being a permanent resident in Singapore is quite arbitrary even after living and working there for more than 10 years. In Norway, I am a family migrant (as someone married to a Norwegian). Being a family migrant in Norway also taught me a lot about how Norway treats migrants who move here for family reunification. For example, there is the absurdly long waiting time (mine took 13 months) for the results of your application for family reunification (which you need to renew every year until you qualify for permanent residency). I even had to ask for priority because I was offered a job before they even looked at my application. They took three days after they received my request for priority processing with a letter attached from my future employer before they approved my application. Is this because they don't consider most family migrants as people who can contribute to Norwegian society? I know Norway is for equality but quicker processing of family migrants who are also highly skilled professionals could be something they need to consider.
