I recently heard a few wait staff at a popular local diner in my city talking about this. The discussion was in regards to another staff member asking about people coming in with dogs. One server explained that she made a patron leave when they brought in a dog. Even after the patron said it was a service dog. She explained that she didn't know when someone is faking a disability so that they can get their dog into the restaurant. And this server would have to ask the person to leave or would not seat them if they did come with their dog. Even if a person showed documentation. The wait staff said they don't know if those were faked documents and it's not the law that they have to sever them. They believe it was the right of the wait staff to decide who could be severed. This was upsetting to hear! And this sparked a discussion with my teenage son. Having him hear this in real time was a mom moment for teaching. He hear first hand how people view others disabilities and the way we are discussed and how the wait staffs behavior was ableist and discriminatory. With all the work that has been done with disability awareness people still hold these views. This should tell us something. We have a long way to go with disability equality!!! Even with all the good work happening even there is a long way to go. Change takes time but not impossible when we all work together. We all have a responsibility to build better for those living with a disability. Having a disability is not something that exists in a vacuum. Disability is a human experience and is apart of every single demographic across the globe. No one is immune from becoming disabled. Age, accident, illness, and mental health come for us all at some point in our lives and our families. We are all Temporarily able-bodied. #disabilityawareness #disabilityadvocacy #disabilityequity #humanexperience #DisabilitySpeaker #change

Our city has a beautiful background of mountains. Almost everywhere you look, you'll see them in the distance. As caregivers, it can be really daunting to go out and explore with our loved ones. We ask things like: Will information pamphlets be available in Braille? Will it be accessible? Will the bathroom stalls be wide enough for my wheelchair? Will there be a place to buy snacks if my blood sugar drops? Will it be safe? The National Park Service has put together an article to help guide you, "Guidebooks and Accessibility: Tools By and For Disabled Visitors, Past, Present, and Future" https://lnkd.in/gPRSJNX7 #mountains #cityscape #caregivers #accessibility #disabilities #NationalParkService #Braille #wheelchairaccessible #safety #inclusion #nature #scenicviews #exploration #disabledcommunity #inclusive #accessibletravel #informationaccess #snacks #safetyconcerns #resource #mountainviews #travelwithdisabilities #barrierfree #inclusiveparks #disabledvisitors #NationalParkService #accessibletourism #safetravel #informationalresources #accessibleinfrastructure #environment #hikingadventures #mobility #accessiblenature #inclusiveexploration #travelaccessibility #disabilitysupport #inclusiveparks #NPSguidebooks #safetravels #CSF #disabilitycaregivers #redrockmountains
