In 2024, Toyota’s vehicle sales in China decreased by 10.8% compared to 2023. The decline is attributed to the increasing competition from Chinese EV manufacturers like BYD, which have been aggressively cutting prices and expanding their market share. Likely in response, Toyota has revealed a stylish bZ7 EV concept they claim they will bring to market in China next year, ironically using BYD blade batteries. Toyota will face stiff competition in the Chinese EV market, and Chinese consumers may be challenging to win over. Toyota Motor Corporation plans to launch three #PHEV models in #China in the next three years with BYD’s #DMi platform. ➡ The Japanese auto giant will also no longer use the #THS (#ToyotaHybridSystem) platform, which powers #HEV models, for newly launched cars in China. ✅ HEV stands for hybrid electric vehicle, and it is basically an #ICE car that can’t be charged, can’t get a green license plate in China, and doesn’t receive the same subsidies and treatment as #BEVs or PHEVs. ✅ Toyota previously launched E+ plug-in hybrid versions of #Corolla, Levin, and RAV4 in China without much success. The three new vehicles will use different PHEV platforms from those models. ➡ Neither Toyota nor BYD confirmed the news. “But what is certain is that if BYD’s DM-i technology is adopted, Toyota will definitely carry out new polishing and tuning, and the driving experience of the final model will still be different,” Caijing reports, citing sources from Toyota. ✅ DM is BYD's PHEV platform, which stands for DualMode and was launched in 2008. ✅ This month, it will launch its fifth generation, which will supposedly allow the models to run a 2000 km range #CLTC and consume 2.9 liters per 100 km. ✅ DM has two main versions: DM-i and DM-p. ▪ DM-i stands for DualMode intelligent and emphasizes low consumption and efficiency. ▪ DM-p is used for all-wheel drive (#AWD) or off-road vehicles. ➡ Recently, BYD also launched a #DMO platform dedicated to hard-core off-road vehicles, which is currently being used for the #FangChengBao lineup. The new Onvo L60 SUV. William Li, co-founder and CEO of the Shanghai-based carmaker, told reporters on Thursday that prices of its Onvo vehicles will not be adjusted frequently in the cutthroat market where dozens of players habitually jostle against each other with massive price cuts. The new brand, which launched on Wednesday to take on models from Tesla and Toyota, will only offer promotions such as free battery swap services to lure customers. Onvo vehicles adopt Nio’s proprietary battery swap technology, which allows owners to quickly exchange a spent battery pack for a fully charged one. The first Onvo model, the L60 SUV, starts at 219,900 yuan (US$30,454), undercutting the basic edition of Tesla’s Shanghai-made Model Y by 30,000 yuan, or 12 per cent. The car has a driving range of 555km, equal to the Model Y’s 554km. The new brand will make a positive contribution to the company’s profitability when its monthly deliveries top 20,000 units, Li said. Last November, #BYD officially unveiled one of its newest additions to its growing range of all-electric vehicles – a sleek electric SUV that was based on the Seal sedan but with an SUV body. The car, known as the Sea Lion 7, is slightly bigger than the #Tesla Model Y. Following the unveiling in January, the brand revealed the specs and boosted specs over the Seal sedan, hinting at a possible upgrade to the motors. This was confirmed earlier this month that the Sea Lion 07 was going to feature BYD’s newest e-Platform 3.0 EVO, which supports motors that can reach speeds of 23,000 rpm. Now, a right-hand-drive (#RHD) version of the Sea Lion 7 has been previewed by Autolifethailand (#ALT) highlighting the key features of the car. The ALT team was able to confirm that BYD will be manufacturing it in RHD which is suited for markets like #Thailand, #Australia, #NewZealand and others countries in the region. Along with that, BYD will likely be taking the car to #UK as well where it recently launched the Atto 3, Seal and the Sea Lion 6 #PHEV. With the new platform on the Sea Lion 7, #DC fast-charging speeds have also been increased to 240 kW which could be used to charge its 82.5 kWh blade battery pack. This would allow for an NEDC range of up to 600 km on a single charge. There is also a single motor standard range variant with a 73.5 kWh battery pack that can deliver up to 540 km of NEDC range. This battery can be charged at up to 180 kW which is significantly higher than the Atto 3 which charges at up to 88 kW. In the local #Chinese market, the Sea Lion’s price starts with at a price equivalent to $A40,480 for the entry-level single-motor variant and goes all the way up to $A51,150 for the top-spec dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant. This new SUV will be 4,830 mm in length, which is 80 mm longer than the Model Y. But the rear boot space is considerably smaller than the Model Y, at 500 litres compared to 854 litres. According to the testing team, the new Sea Lion 7 will be launched in Thailand by the end of 2024. At this stage, no details on local launch are available but more is likely to be announced closer to the end of the year, possibly in line with the Thailand market launch.

Have you seen the new BYD Seal? Or the latest Toyota Prius Prime? The styling looks cool and the specs under the hood are impressive. An EV car 5 years ago would be obsolete today. Range, power, hi-tech screens, comfort etc. This is about the state of EVs - and how relentless innovation is shaping the industry. And what it should mean for car buyers. Between 1914 and 1944, there were 3 big leaps in airplane design, mostly brought on war -and innovation. The Me109 was Germany's premier fighter from 1937-1940, it was powerful in a dive, okay in a turn, and has extremely short range. When it met the Spitfire over England in 1940, it met its equal. But by 1941, the Me109 was adequate, no longer premier - and by 1943 it was borderline obsolete. Yes, it was upgraded from the E model to the K model through the war; but all that did was to make it adequate for the task but unable to compete with the latest model of fighters head-to-head. In WW1, winning designs would be obsolete within months (Fokker Tri-decker). What does this mean for EVs? We are in a state of rapid innovation in the EV space - and this include BEVs, hybrids, PHEVs. 1. If you are looking at a BYD Seal today, there is a big risk that it will be 'obsolete; in 2 years, and its resale price falls. If you bought the car for everyday use for 10 years, and is going to let it depreciate to the zero - then this should not affect you. If you are buying a cheap second car to go around, this should not affect you. Otherwise it is wise to flip every 2 years. 2. Teslas and Mustangs had cool design language when they were first launched, but because Tesla's design cycle time is slow (because Giga casting is a fast, super economical but rigid process/manufacturing system) - Tesla then competes under the hood. It still has one of the best battery drivetrain systems - but it is not unarguably the best today. 3. We are in BEV 1,0. Still. Yes, it is amazing that after so long we are still using the same lithium-ion battery tech. When we are in BEV2.0, hybrids will start to disappear, like biplanes at the start of WW2. (Gloster Gladiators and Cr42 Falcos were the most optimised biplanes fighters of WW2. And I am sure there are better biplanes today, but the point is biplanes are not the platforms for war.) 4. For car makers, having the best biplane today is not going to cut it. It is the race for the jet age, but one has to survive the crucible of inline piston-engine, steel frame fighter period to get there.

How cheap can Chinese cars get: Comparable to Toyota Corolla at 270 million VND, 0.7L per 100km, customers are “crazy” about them      Chinese automaker BYD is surprising the domestic car industry with the launch of a new model at a very low price. That’s the Qin Plus DM-i Plug-in Hybrid model with a starting price of 79,800 TWD, equivalent to 272 million VND. At this price, the Qin Plus DM-i becomes the most competitive model in its segment, at least in China – where it is sold.      In a social media post, BYD boldly declares: “The price will make gasoline car manufacturers tremble.”                                  According to BYD, the Qin Plus DM-i has dimensions of 4,765 x 1,837 x 1,495 (mm), with a wheelbase of 2,718 mm. With these dimensions, the Qin Plus DM-i is a C-segment sedan, equivalent to the Toyota Corolla Altis or the KIA K3.      However, with a price of less than 80,000 TWD, the Qin Plus DM-i is 15% cheaper than the best-selling Volkswagen Lavida in its segment in China, 40% cheaper than the Toyota Corolla Altis, or 50% cheaper than the Toyota Prius.      Moreover, surprisingly, BYD is planning to launch a Glory Edition version at a lower price of 20,000 TWD (68 million VND), making the price of the car… really unbelievable.      The entire Qin Plus DM-i lineup will use a 1.5L natural gas turbocharged engine with 110 horsepower, and 135 Nm of torque. Moreover, this model is also equipped with an electric motor with 2 power levels: 180 horsepower / 316 Nm or 197 horsepower / 325 Nm.                                 < p> Unlike regular hybrid models, the Qin Plus DM-i is a plug-in hybrid – meaning users can charge the car’s battery. According to BYD, the Qin Plus DM-i uses a Blade battery developed and produced by the company, with a capacity of 8.32 kWh or 18.32 kWh.      With the 2 battery capacities, the Qin Plus DM-i can travel 55km or 120km (according to NEDC standard) in pure electric mode.      The NEDC combined fuel consumption is 1.2 liters / 100km or 0.7 liters / 100km, corresponding to the 2 battery versions. Even when the battery is at its weakest, the fuel consumption of this car is still impressive. All versions have a NEDC result of 3.8L / 100km.                                  With the super low price, users may expect to have a car with a basic, rudimentary interior. However, the Qin Plus DM-i is not like that. The Qin Plus DM-i is equipped with a large central entertainment screen, along with a digital instrument cluster. Customers can also choose to have leather interior (including seats and dashboard area). In addition, the Qin Plus DM-i can also be equipped with a panoramic sunroof.      After its launch, BYD announced that it had received over 15,000 orders in just 3 days.
