🛒 2 in 5 UK shoppers do not believe big discount Black Friday deals In our recent poll of 1,000 UK Shoppers we put the spotlight on purchasing habits during one of the country’s biggest annual shopping events - Black Friday sales 🛍 Our research showed that 40% of UK shoppers feel that large Black Friday discounts of 50% or more are not believable. If you’re looking for jaw-dropping Black Friday deals this year… keep looking. This year might mark the end of Black Friday as we know it. What's driving it? Shoppers. Consumer confidence is low. Economic uncertainty has made shoppers cautious about big purchases and splurges. Retailers are pulling back in response. They were burned post-COVID and are protecting margins this year with lower discount percentages. (think 25% off vs. 70% off in the past) They are also spreading sales out over several weeks instead of limiting it to a particular day. The strategy? Capture cautious shoppers with multiple, smaller purchases rather than one big splurge on Black Friday or Cyber Monday. The data here tells the story: •Holiday spending growth is projected at just 2.5-3.5%, the slowest since 2018 (Financial Times) •Unit sales for general merchandise are already down 3% year-over-year (Circana) •20% of all Holiday sales will come from ultra-discount sites like Temu, AliExpress, and SHEIN (Forbes) I expect this Black Friday to be the first of a new type of Holiday discounting: one that's more measured and prolonged. Think month-long "Holiday Promotions" vs. Black Friday doorbusters. Maybe that's a good thing for our collective wallets, and sanity. As we wrap up the 2024 Black Friday shopping season, it’s clear that offering diverse payment options — especially Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) — can really make a difference in boosting sales. I came across a report from Mastercard SpendingPulse (https://lnkd.in/e9w9XQ5Q) that caught my attention: U.S. retail sales grew by 3.4%, and BNPL played a big role in that. It makes sense when you think about it — BNPL allows shoppers to spread out payments over time, making higher-priced items feel more accessible. With this flexibility, consumers can take advantage of sales without worrying about the immediate financial hit. Retailers who’ve embraced BNPL are seeing real benefits, especially in categories like electronics and apparel. The ability to pay over time gives people more purchasing power and reduces the hesitation that often comes with making bigger purchases — something we’re all feeling in today’s cautious economic climate. It's clear offering flexible payment options will continue to have a huge impact on how retailers connect with consumers.

This year, our Black Friday Sale has been more focused on meeting our customers' needs than ever before. So, when we came across the recent PwC report on consumer spending during this season, we felt a sense of relief. Here's why... "Around 56% will plan their purchases before or during the week of Black Friday and 25% will not plan ahead." - To cater to all types of shoppers, we extended our sale period this year to allow customers a longer length of time to make conscious and considered purchasing decisions. "The study also showed that half (52%) of Irish consumers are of the view that a bargain means a price reduction of between 25% and 50%, and 22% believe it is a discount of around 50%." - Our sale messaging this year has been focused on up to 50% off most products sitewide, with at least 25% off most bestsellers on site. "Approximately 22% of Irish consumers said that they are unhappy about excessive queues, stock running out and stores being too busy compared to 19% in Europe." - This year, we took proactive steps to prepare our warehouse, ensuring ample stock was available to meet demand and prevent shortages of popular products. "Over one in ten (13%) are frustrated by longer delivery times than expected, more than European counterparts (11%)." - We have operated a 3-4 delivery period from the point of order consistently throughout the month of November. "Three-quarters (77%) of Irish consumers said that it is important that they can shop both online and in bricks-and-mortar stores during the Black Friday/Cyber Monday period." - We opened our latest pop-up store in Kildare Village earlier this month just in time to welcome Black Friday in-store shoppers. Black Friday is a busy time for most retailers, so we’re thrilled with the positive feedback we’ve received from our customers so far and look forward to seeing it continue through the weekend!
