The need for sustainability certification begs the question: why do we need it if doing good should be a given? In an ideal world, perhaps. But in reality, trust is not given, it’s earned. March writing is 🆙 Here, I am exploring the intersection between economic theory of asymmetric information and the proliferation of sustainability certificates. My goal is to write one article per month for 2024. If you have recommendations on topics or issues that I can dive deep into, please do let me know 😁 https://lnkd.in/gasBRiBC #sustainability #sustainabilitywriting #sustainabilitycertificate #esg #writings #circulareconomy

#6 Workshop notice "Context-based sustainability and how the EU legal framework falls short" A session by Sustenuto (2 PM - 3PM) The challenge for any company is that the context varies. To develop a robust #ESG strategy, it's recommended to consider triple materiality, also called "context-based materiality", that acknowledges how issues varies based on location and will result in the specific impacts and dependencies. For example, biodiversity might be critical for one product’s supply chain but freshwater use could matter much more somewhere else. So how do EU sustainability laws and policies relate to these varying contexts? Join the workshop during Open Doors Day for thought-provoking discussions on advancing sustainability in the EU. Impact House 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐃𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐲 📅 When? 30 August 2024, 11:30 AM - 4:00 PM 📍 Where? Impact House, Joseph II Street 20, 1000 Brussels No reservation needed. First come, first served. You can combine workshops with a visit to the House. More information: https://lnkd.in/eQtW79ZC

The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) welcomes the decision of the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) to commence work on nature-related issues drawing on the recommendations of the TNFD. This is a critical next step in developing the global baseline for sustainability reporting following the release of its IFRS S1 and IFRS S2 sustainability reporting standards in 2023. Following the release of the TNFD recommendations in September 2023, the roll out of the European Sustainability Reports Standards (ESRS) and the recent update to the GRI biodiversity standard (GRI Biodiversity 101), the ISSB announcement is another important step forward for nature-related corporate reporting. The further incorporation of nature-related issues into the global reporting baseline, drawing on the work of the TNFD, will provide investors and report preparers with a more integrated approach across governance, strategy, risks management and metrics and targets.

🌱The common (and surprising) challenge that sustainability managers are facing in 2024 – and how to tackle it. In my job of advising companies on biodiversity, I see many sustainability managers struggling with getting their company strategy prepared for the new CSRD reporting obligations, particularly the ESRS E4 🏛️ While this is a trial enough in itself, they are not just struggling on how to prepare for the reporting. 🧩Many are still grappling with the right arguments to convince management to allocate enough resources to it. It is hard to provide universal arguments, the monetary assessment of opportunities and risks is strongly dependent on the individual business. But lets try; 𝐓𝐨 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬, 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐰 𝐮𝐩𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐮𝐥, 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐭-𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬: 1. 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤 𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐝 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬 Biodiversity loss can disrupt key ecosystem services like pollination and water filtration, driving up operational costs. By investing, companies can safeguard these resources and avoid significant disruptions that could hit their bottom line. 2. 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐮𝐩𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 With regulations like the CSRD or EUDR coming into effect, companies need to get ahead of compliance. Early action on biodiversity not only helps you avoid fines but also positions your business as a responsible leader. 3. 𝐄𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐥 Sustainability is no longer a “nice-to-have” for consumers and investors - it’s a must. Companies with robust biodiversity strategies can attract more eco-conscious customers and ESG-focused investors, driving long-term financial growth. 4. 𝐔𝐧𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞-𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 Green infrastructure and biodiversity-linked carbon credits are unlocking new funding opportunities. This creates avenues for financial support, lower operational costs, and even new revenue streams. 5. 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 Investing in biodiversity builds resilience against future environmental risks, such as resource scarcity and supply chain disruptions. Companies that act now are better positioned for stable, long-term growth. I suggest that you get started with higher-management training, where you include sector-specific information. Get the leaders involved and educated through business associations or strategic workshops. Companies can begin with tools like Ramboll’s Biodiversity Maturity Guide to assess their current standing and move forward - outlining your company’s path from beginner to expert. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dkZGvxX5 Bildrechte © Marie Staggat #biodiversity #sustainability #CSRD

I wrote this paper to discuss Sustainability issues related to Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES). Generally, PES schemes are essential for sustaining environmental benefits while improving the livelihoods of landowners. The document outlines the types of ecosystem services, including provisioning, supporting, regulating, and cultural services. The document emphasizes the importance of aligning PES with smart agricultural practices, sustainable development policies, and bioeconomy models to achieve long-term success. It also stresses the need for efficient governance, public policy, and financing to make these programs viable. Ultimately, PES is seen as a critical tool for balancing ecosystem preservation and improving life quality for rural communities.
