England Launches Heat Network Zones with Nearly £6 Million in Government Funding Six cities in England are set to revolutionize their heating systems by creating the country's first heat network zones. Leeds, Plymouth, Bristol, Stockport, Sheffield, and two areas in London will benefit from a share of £5.8 million in government funding designated for these groundbreaking initiatives. Since Jan 1 2022, the City of Vancouver has required electric (domestic) hot water for new low rise residential construction. As of this week, thanks to a team lead by Patrick Enright (that I have worked on), Vancouver is shifting to (domestic) hot water that is heated only by electricity or equipment that is 100% (or greater) efficient as of Jan 1 2027. So electric resistance (presently heating more hot water in low rise then any other technology), electric heat pumps, gas heat pumps, and packaged hybrid equipment will all be options at the time of equipment replacement. This work aligns with Provincial direction to phase out the sale of equipment less then 100% efficient by 2030 in British Columbia. Sure, it’s no theme park but this week gases will ride 💨 Our Central Interceptor crews are installing the final giant white pipes onto a yellow steel frame that make up a new air treatment filter plant. We’re a fan ‘cos the 100kg per metre fibreglass pipes will connect to giant header fans that draw harmful gases from the Central Interceptor tunnel and send them to an odour treatment bed where natural microorganisms will break them down. This is the project’s largest air treatment facility. In fact, our team has just finished installing its mate at our May Road site in Mt Roskill, halfway along the 16.2-kilometre tunnel route. So, why are they doing this? 👉 The pressure in the tunnel will change constantly depending on the volume of combined wastewater and stormwater flowing through it, so this will help keep things on an even keel, while pump stations dotted along the tunnel route will also do their bit to remove gases.
