Taking ownership is critical.

As a CEO you gotta take ownership when you were the reason something didn’t work. It’s your responsibility to properly training and onboarding your team and sometimes we get so wrapped up in a culture of urgency that we drop the ball on training and teaching. You can’t expect what you haven’t taught.

Taking ownership means acknowledging that there's SOMETHING you could have done to make the situation better, then communicating (and implementing!) the plan to make it better in the future. As a leader, I must be the chief ownership taker and apologizer. That applies in my role as an employee, manager, father and husband. That way, others will feel comfortable admitting their own mistakes. One of my favorite lessons from Extreme Ownership is that there are no bad teams, only bad leaders. If the team isn't performing, it's a leadership issue. And if nothing else, you're always a team of at least 1.
