Bringing your pet to someone else’s house for Thanksgiving? Be sure to chat with the host ahead of time to set rules and boundaries! However, keep in mind that pets are often happier at home than at festivities. If you’ll be away for a while, consider asking a neighbor, friend, or pet sitter to check on your pet instead of bringing them along. Su-paw-ting older South Australians to care for their furry companions An innovative pilot program that provided support to help older people care for their companion animals, has resulted in participants experiencing significantly improved physical and mental health, and reduce loneliness and social isolation. Safe Pets Safe Families was awarded a $40,000 Positive Ageing Fellowship last year through the Office for Ageing Well, to run the Paws with Friends pilot. The program, which ran over a 12-month period, offered tailored animal-focussed services delivered by volunteers, such as dog walking, vet trips, respite and grooming, alongside human services such as connection between the older person and volunteers. More than 1,100 services were offered during the pilot, to support 12 women and five men, with their animal companions including dogs, cats and birds. Of the 17 older people who participated, almost all had complex medical conditions, 12 had disability, three had experienced family breakdown, nine had reported feeling social isolated, four had been impacted by domestic and family violence, 10 experienced financial hardship and two were at risk of homelessness. Paws with Friends remains in operation and is seeking further funding to sustain the resounding success of its first year. As much as possible, Safe Pets Safe Families utilises its dedicated volunteer pool – all outreach workers are volunteers - but there is a need for paid project coordination, including oversight of volunteer caseworkers. Program volunteers and clients have expressed that it is evident the program is not just there for the wellbeing of pets, it is for the wellbeing of older people too. Several clients have reported improvements in mental health and social connection, resulting in an even greater appreciation for the comfort brought by their pets, as well as a sense of being part of the community.

Full Disclaimer (and anyone who knows me well will tell you) I am not an animal person! But it feels right this Mental Health Awareness Week that I share with you the great work being done at Holy Trinity Boar Lane that I get to support through SIXTY at Holy Trinity Boar Lane. It's no secret that many of us, myself included, struggle with mental health and that we don't get to leave it at home but it comes to work with us. Impacting, some days more than others how we are in the workplace. When you host an event with us the profits go towards the work carried out at Holy Trinity: meaning this fella - Bertie can visit any of you in your businesses and that there is a free chaplaincy service supporting social, spiritual and emotional well-being in the City of Leeds. So if you are like me and you see lots of posts during awareness weeks and don't necessarily know what to do and are seeking something practical. Check it out and see how we could help you. It's not a problem solving service but what it does do is create a space where we don't have to journey through it alone. #mentalhealthawarenessweek #wellbeing #leeds #petsastherapy
He's only gone and done it! 🐶 Our Holy Trinity dog, Bertie, has passed his Pets As Therapy test! 🎉 He's now a fully certified Pets As Therapy dog, and available to book for workplaces in Leeds city centre. > https://lnkd.in/emjFbvUp 🐶

WHO TAKES CARE OF YOUR PETS (FURBABIES) IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO YOU? Most of us have “furbabies” – either a dog, a cat (or both) that we consider our family. All of us want something in place to take care of our children in the event that something (God forbid) happens to us in the short term, and we need to know how this would impact the people we love. Did you know that planning for our pets can be done, so that we know that our wishes concerning who will take care of them if we cannot, will take place? Unfortunately, so many people with beloved pets don’t consider this, and family members are forced to turn the pet over to a humane society where they may never find a new “forever” home. Want to more about estate planning and avoid this awful outcome altogether – we offer free consultations to get you the advice you need!
